The Ten Plagues

Haggadah Section: -- Ten Plagues

Alright, folks, it's time to talk about the ten plagues. And no, we're not talking about the time your cousin brought lice to the family reunion. We're talking about the biblical plagues that were sent to Egypt to convince Pharaoh to let the Israelites go.

So, why ten plagues? Well, it's like a biblical version of a "one-two punch." Or in this case, a "one-two-three-four-five-six-seven-eight-nine-ten punch." Each plague was more intense than the last, like a ladder of suffering that eventually convinced Pharaoh to give in.

Now, the plagues themselves might seem a little... weird. I mean, who sends frogs as a punishment? But let's break them down, one by one:

First, we've got the water turning into blood. Then came frogs, lice, wild animals, diseased livestock, boils, hail, locusts, darkness, and finally, the death of the firstborn.

Basically, the plagues were like a divine version of a "your mom" insult. "Oh, you won't let my people go? Well, how do you like them boils, Pharaoh?"

So, there you have it. The ten plagues: a story of divine intervention, stubbornness, and really weird punishment choices.

Dip a finger into your wine glass and make one drop on your plate for each plague.

Repeat after the leader.

BLOOD / dam
FROGS / tzfardeiya
LICE / kinim
BEASTS / arov
CATTLE DISEASE / dever
BOILS / sh’chin
HAIL / barad
LOCUSTS / arbeh
DARKNESS / choshech
DEATH OF THE FIRSTBORN / makat b’chorot

And now, to bring us back to reality a bit, let's think of the plagues that we are suffering in our world today. And how we can work to help ameliorate them.

HUNGER
WAR
TERRORISM
GREED
BIGOTRY
INJUSTICE
POVERTY
IGNORANCE
POLLUTION OF THE EARTH
INDIFFERENCE TO SUFFERING
