It is our job to make our story accessible to all the members of our community, so we think about how we might best reach each type of child.</p>\n\n<p>בָּרוּךְ הַמָּקוֹם, בָּרוּךְ הוּא. בָּרוּךְ שֶׁנָּתַן תּוֹרָה לְעַמּוֹ יִשְׂרָאֵל, בָּרוּךְ הוּא<br />\nכְּנֶגֶד אַרְבָּעָה בָנִים דִּבְּרָה תּוֹרָה . אֶחָד חָכָם, וְאֶחָד רָשָׁע, וְאֶחָד תָּם, וְאֶחָד שֶׁאֵינוֹ יוֹדֵעַ לִשְׁאוֹל</p>\n\n<p>The Torah speaks of four types of children: one is wise, one is wicked, one is simple, and one does not know how to ask.</p>\n\n<p>חָכָם מָה הוּא אוֹמֵר? מַה הָעֵדוֹת וְהַחֻקִּים וְהַמִשְׁפָּטִים אֲשֶׁר צִוָּה יי אֱלֹהֵינוּ אֶתְכֶם? וְאַף אַתָּה אֱמָר לוֹ כְּהִלְכוֹת הַפֶּסַח: אֵין מַפְטִירִין אַחַר הַפֶּסַח אֲפִיקוֹמָן.</p>\n\n<p>The Wise One asks: \"What is the meaning of the laws and traditions God has commanded?\" (Deuteronomy 6:20) You should teach him all the traditions of Passover, even to the last detail.</p>\n\n<p>רָשָׁע מָה הוּא אוֹמֵר? מָה הָעֲבֹדָה הַזֹּאת לָכֶם? לָכֶם - וְלֹא לוֹ. וּלְפִי שֶׁהוֹצִיא אֶת עַצְמוֹ מִן הַכְּלָל כָּפַר בְּעִקָּר<br />\n.וְאַף אַתָּה הַקְהֵה אֶת שִנָּיו וֶאֱמֹר לוֹ: בַּעֲבוּר זֶה עָשָׂה יי לִי בְּצֵאתִי מִמִּצְרָיִם. לִי - וְלֹא לוֹ. אִילּוּ הָיָה שָׁם, לֹא הָיָה נִגְאָל</p>\n\n<p>The Wicked One asks: \"What does this ritual mean to you?\" (Exodus 12:26) To you and not to himself! By using the expression \"to you\" he excludes himself from his people and denies God. What is behind this tradition?</p>\n\n<p>Seder means “order.” The fifteen ordered steps and rituals of the Passover seder help us to tell the story of the Jewish people’s liberation from slavery in Egypt. Every one of us has come out of Egypt. Therefore, every one of us has the responsibility to retell this story out loud to each other, so that we can all remember together.</p>\n\n<p>For today’s seder we choose to recognize that while the Jewish people may be free, not everyone has cause for celebration. Initially, and for some still, people see the orange as originating as a response to sexism and exclusion of women. The tale was that a man once said that women don’t belong leading aspects of worship in Judaism by saying “A woman on the bimah is like an orange on the Seder plate.” We can respond to this by celebrating the orange and placing it in the center the Seder plate. Just as women belong on the bima, so must an orange belong on the Seder plate. In the same way, it represents the fruitfulness of <em>all </em> Jews, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people. Nerot: </strong>We begin the Seder by lighting the candles.</p>\n\n<p><strong>2. Kadesh</strong>: Recite the Kiddush over the 1st cup of wine. We drink while reclining, to highlight our status as free people.</p>\n\n<p><strong>3. Ur'chatz</strong>: Wash your hands without reciting a blessing.</p>\n\n<p><strong>4. Karpas</strong>: Eat a vegetable (potato, radish, celery or cucumber) dipped in salt water. The salt water reminds us of the salty tears the Jews shed in Egypt from their backbreaking labor.</p>\n\n<p><strong>5. Yachatz</strong>: Break the middle Matzah from the 3 Matzos on the Seder plate. Leave the smaller piece, and hide the larger piece for the Afikoman, which will be eaten later.</p>\n\n<p><strong>6. Maggid</strong>: In this lengthly part of the Seder, we tell our story of our exile and redemption from Egypt.  <em>After the Maggid, we drink the 2nd cup of wine.</em> </p>\n\n<p><strong>7. Rachtzah</strong>: Wash your hands in preparation for eating the Matzah. Recite the blessing \"Al Netilat Yadayiim\" as you would any time before eating bread or Matzah.</p>\n\n<p><strong>8. Motzi Matzah</strong>: Recite the Hamotzi blessing over the Matzah. We eat Matzah while leaning to the left, just as we reclined while drinking each of the four cups of wine.</p>\n\n<p><strong>9. He advised the Pharaoh to build storehouses to store the grain, which the Pharaoh thought was a tremendous idea, because up until that point, he had been storing the grain in the bathroom, and it was disgusting. Pharaoh was also very keen on Joseph’s grain storage plan because when years of famine struck, there was still food to eat in Egypt.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>The Pharaoh was so grateful to Joseph, that when Joseph’s brothers came to Egypt in search of food, he invited them to settle in an area called Goshen. The Pharaoh’s daughter was like, “Sure!” So bottom line – this woman went out to take a bath and came home with a baby and two new domestic employees. We can only imagine what she would have done with a credit card. </span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>So Miriam ran and fetched her mom, Yocheved, to help the princess raise the baby. Yocheved was very happy because she could now be with her own son! This was actually a pretty good fate for her baby, considering she hooked him up with some pretty serious waves on the Nile without a helmet or even straps! Dude! <i>What</i> were you thinking? </span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>But this all had to be done so that they could come up with the baby’s name, which was basically an ancient Egyptian Baby Name Reveal. They called the baby Moshe, because they “brought him out” of the water. And from this point on, Moshe was destined to focus on the “bringing out” in life. Bringing sheep down from the mountain. Bringing the Israelites out of Egypt. Bringing the crap out of an Egyptian for hurting a Jew. G-d told Moses that he should go back to Egypt and lead his people to freedom. Moses was afraid the people would not believe him. So G-d told him to throw down his rod on the ground. (Apparently, one walked around nonchalantly with rods then, like it was nothing!) </span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>Anyway, he threw his rod on the ground, and the rod turned into a serpent. Moses was afraid again, but G-d said to him, “Don’t be. Sure, killer angels had just slaughtered a large percentage of his people’s children, and the streets were a disgusting stew of blood, frogs and locusts, and it was hailing and dark, and everybody had lice and boils. But on the other hand, the Pharaoh had just lost his free labor force, to say nothing of what the Israelites’ departure did to the Egyptian entertainment industry. </span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>Also, the Pharaoh was a huge fan of gefilte fish, which his Egyptian chefs couldn’t seem to get right no matter how hard he had them flogged.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>So the Pharaoh sent his army to bring the Israelites back. His soldiers caught up with them on the banks of the Sea of Reeds, where the Israelites were discussing the fact that a sea of reeds seemed to be blocking their escape route.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>When they saw the Egyptian army, the Israelites were afraid and cried out, “Holy crap! We are royally screwed…no pun intended!” But they were wrong, for at that moment, Adonai told Moses to lift his rod. Moses was briefly uncomfortable with this command, but then he remembered that he was carrying a walking stick. </span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>He raised it, and a strong eastern wind parted the waters of the sea, leaving space for the Israelites to cross over dry land and also to pick up an array of interesting seashells that would have otherwise been inaccessible.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>The Egyptian army, none of whom apparently had been paying the slightest bit of attention to anything happening in Egypt over the past couple of weeks, decided it would be a good idea to follow them. Moses lifted his rod again, and the waters rushed back and covered the Egyptian soldiers, along with their horses and chariots. We forgot to mention that they had horses and chariots. That was why it was so easy for them to catch up to the Israelites. However, let’s journey a little longer into what happened after this moment in time. </span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>After crossing the Sea of Reeds, the Hebrews spent forty years wandering in the desert, also referred to as the wilderness. Initially, this was because Moses (like many typical male prophets) refused to ask for directions to the land of Canaan.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>But later, other factors emerged: when twelve Hebrew spies did manage to sneak into the Desert of Paran, on the edge of the Promised Land, they discovered that while the soil was fertile, the land was inhabited by giants. Yup, that’s right. Giants. </span></span></span><span><span><span>Though it is also possible that the twelve spies were all really short, or that they happened to reach the Desert of Paran on Stilt Day.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>In any case, the people were afraid of the giants, and many wanted to return to Egypt. This was super lame, and Moses told them that they were not worthy to enter the Promised Land. Instead, they would wander in the wilderness for forty years, until the generation that had refused to enter died and instead their children would inherit the Promised Land. Weirdly, the issue of the giants never came up again.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>The Israelites did not greet this new plan with enthusiasm, as it pretty much called for several decades of just hanging around, waiting to kick the bucket. The supply of matzah had been gone for months at this point, and the Israelites were sick of eating sand and table scraps for breakfast, lunch and dinner.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>Moses knew he had to do something to boost morale, or these people were going to lose their minds. Luckily, Adonai our G-d knew just what to do. As is so often the case with our people, the solution came in the form of food. </span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>For the next forty years, the Israelites were nourished by a substance that fell from heaven. It was fine and flaky, like divine dandruff, and it arrived with the dew every night. The Israelites gathered it before the morning sun caused it to melt, and they pounded it into cakes, which were then baked. Our idea of roughing it is a hotel where the breakfast buffet does not have an omelet station.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>Anyway, on the third day of camping, a giant cloud descended on the mountain, making the sound of a trumpet, so the Israelites gathered around to find out what the heck was going on. The G-d spoke from inside the cloud. At least he <i>said</i> he was G-d; there was no way to tell for sure because of the cloud. Whoever was in there told the Israelites there was going to be a covenant featuring <span>Ten Commandments</span>. This made the Israelites nervous, because it sounded strict. He was gone for forty days and forty nights (as opposed to forty days and thirty-nine nights, which would have been a little cheaper). This works out to four days per commandment. It was like getting a covenant from the Department of Motor Vehicles. </span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>At this point, the Israelites started getting antsy. “Hey, what’s he doing up there?” they said in unison. “How long does it take to get a few measly commandments?”</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>He was gone so long that the Israelites became very upset and – we have all done this in times of stress – made a Golden Calf and worshipped it. Basically, the Israelites, fearing that Moses would not return, began losing faith and demanded that Moses’s older brother, Aaron, make them a new god. So Aaron gathered up their golden earrings and ornaments and constructed an idol for them to pray to and exalt for bringing them out of the land of Egypt. </span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>Finally, Moses came down with the <span>Ten Commandments</span>, which were written on two stone tablets because G-d had used a large font. When he saw the Golden Calf, he got ticked off and threw the tablets on the ground, breaking them. </span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>Fortunately, they were still under warranty, and G-d wrote out another set of commandments, but this time in a slightly smaller font and underlined the one about obeying your parents. This suggests they were not wandering in anything close to a straight line. They were getting pretty loopy. By this point, Moses was over one hundred years old, and most of the other original Israelites were dead. </span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>The rest had been born in the desert and after all the wandering, were getting pretty cranky. “Are we there yet?” they constantly asked Moses.
