Passover has always been a holiday...", "user_image": "", "user_image_original": "", "body": "<p>Why is this year different than all other years?- Why is this sedar important to you?</p>\n\n<p>Passover has always been a holiday where space and time are like Einstein said: relative. Throughout history Jews have been called to imagine what it was like to be in the same time and space as their ancestral, enslaved Jews in Egypt.  So while it may be hard to imagine a time where the water turned to blood, thunderstorms of hail and fire rained from the skies, and frogs and locusts were everywhere. It's not hard to imagine a world filled with horrors daily that are brought about by our own plague- the COVID-19 pandemic.</p>\n\n<p>And the effects of the pandemic extend far beyond the millions of infections, deaths, and lingering physical effects of the disease. People live in fear of not only death but starvation, homelessness, and unemployment, it has fueled our social isolation and political divides and increased anxiety, depression, addiction, domestic violence, and divorce. It has torn apart families, businesses, and institutions.  </p>\n\n<p>in ancient times when the Jews reached their homeland but were later dispersed in the diaspora, they have since imagined that next year they will be back in the same space - Jerusalem.  </p>\n\n<p>We too have had our lives disrupted and separated from that which have come to appreciate as normal and fulfilling, and are prevented from gathering in the same space.</p>\n\n<p>So when we end our seder saying, “Next Year in Jerusalem,” we will add a wish of “Next year may we be physically together in the same space, safe and mentally and physically well\" </p>\n\n<p>Thinking of time and space, the Passover story can be a metaphor for mindfulness that guides our actions and interactions. </p>\n\n<p>What ideas about being present in your mind are there to consider? What freedom from too many grievances from the past can we attain? The stories we tell our children shape what they believe to be possible—which is why at Passover, we must tell the stories of the women who played a crucial role in the Exodus narrative.</p>\n\n<p>The Book of Exodus, much like the Book of Genesis, opens in pervasive darkness. Genesis describes the earth as “unformed and void, with darkness over the surface of the deep.”^{<a href=\"https://ajws.org/blog/justice-ruth-bader-ginsburg-on-passover/#1\">1</a>} In Exodus, darkness attends the accession of a new Pharaoh who feared the Israelites and so enslaved them. God alone lights the way out of the darkness in Genesis. But in Exodus, God has many partners, first among them, five brave women.</p>\n\n<p>There is Yocheved, Moses’ mother, and Shifra and Puah, the famous midwives. Each defies Pharaoh’s decree to kill the Israelite baby boys. And there is Miriam, Moses’ sister, about whom the following midrash is taught:</p>\n\n<blockquote>\n<p>[When Miriam’s only brother was Aaron] she prophesied… “my mother is destined to bear a son who will save Israel.” When [Moses] was born the whole house… filled with light[.] [Miriam’s] father arose and kissed her on the head, saying, “My daughter, your prophecy has been fulfilled.” But when they threw [Moses] into the river her father tapped her on the head saying, “Daughter, where is your prophecy?” So it is written, “And [Miriam] stood afar off to know what would be[come of] the latter part of her prophecy.”^{<a href=\"https://ajws.org/blog/justice-ruth-bader-ginsburg-on-passover/#2\">2</a>}</p>\n</blockquote>\n\n<p>Finally, there is Pharaoh’s daughter Batya, who defies her own father and plucks baby Moses out of the Nile. The Midrash reminds us that Batya knew exactly what she doing:</p>\n\n<blockquote>\n<p>When Pharaoh’s daughter’s handmaidens saw that she intended to rescue Moses, they attempted to dissuade her, and persuade her to heed her father. They said to her: “Our mistress, it is the way of the world that when a king issues a decree, it is not heeded by the entire world, but his children and the members of his household do observe it, and you wish to transgress your father’s decree?”^{<a href=\"https://ajws.org/blog/justice-ruth-bader-ginsburg-on-passover/#3\">3</a>}</p>\n</blockquote>\n\n<p>But transgress she did.</p>\n\n<p>These women had a vision leading out of the darkness shrouding their world. They were women of action, prepared to defy authority to make their vision a reality bathed in the light of the day.</p>\n\n<p>Retelling the heroic stories of Yocheved, Shifra, Puah, Miriam and Batya reminds our daughters that with vision and the courage to act, they can carry forward the tradition those intrepid women launched.</p>\n\n<p>While there is much light in today’s world, there remains in our universe disheartening darkness, inhumanity spawned by ignorance and hate. We see horrific examples in the Middle East, parts of Africa, and Ukraine. Instead, we get an impressionistic collection of songs, images, and stories of both the Exodus from Egypt and from Passover celebrations through the centuries.  Tonight we will look to better understand the why and how we can get meaning today. </p>\n\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><b><span><span>Reader </span></span></b></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>To celebrate the <i>Seder </i>is not merely to recall the Exodus; it is to recapture it. We are taught that <i>“In every generation, all of us are obliged to regard ourselves as if we ourselves went forth from the land of Egypt.” (Exodus 13:8) </i>So it is not enough to remember; we must ourselves enter the story and, through prayer and song and symbol and ceremony, make it our own. We must feel the lash and feel the hope that defeats its pain. We must feel the water at our feet, and the fresh breeze of freedom on our face. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>In his book “Everything is Illuminated,” Jonathan Safran Foer writes, “Jews have six senses: touch, taste, sight, smell, hearing … memory.” For better or worse, we are people who reminisce. We hold on to the bits and pieces of our past with tenacity, perhaps frightened that if we don’t remember, no one else will. At its core, the Passover holiday teaches us to hold on to our stories. We are reminded of the drama of the golden calf episode as God gives Moses instructions to “carve the tablets of stone like the first …” (Exodus 34:1). As if Moses could forget that, in his fury, he destroyed the first set, God adds the poignant words “ … which you shattered.” The word in Hebrew for what Moses did to those tablets is sh-v-r, the same root used when the shofar blasts a wailing, broken sound.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>What happened to the remnants of the first set of commandments? The Talmud teaches that God also told Moses: “The first tablets that you broke … place them in the ark.” This teaches us that both the whole tablets and the broken tablets were placed in the ark. (Bava Batra 14b). Far from being forgotten, the pieces of brokenness rest alongside the wholeness of the rewritten version of the covenant.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>What might those fragments represent? For Moses, perhaps they are a reminder of his potential to lash out in anger or his intense disappointment in the people he had helped liberate. For the people who urged Aaron to create the calf, those shards could be a reminder of their shortsightedness, or their disorientation in the absence of their leader, Moses. <b>For everyone, they are a reminder that despite our best efforts, we are weighed down by our shortcomings, painful memories, or disappointment in ourselves and others.</b></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>We carry around our broken pieces within us, some more than others. But Moses’ job in this episode is to begin the healing process by creating a new set of tablets. The brokenness will not be forgotten, but the fractured and the healed pieces are allowed, even mandated, to sit side by side in the ark. A few verses later, Moses carves the tablets and receives the law once more on Mount. Sinai.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Then the mood shifts and we are instructed to “observe the feast of matzah during the month you were set free from Egypt” (Exodus 34:18). The Exodus story, like the story of the writing and rewriting of the tablets, is another story of brokenness-to-wholeness that we retell every year. It begins with shackles and ends in liberation. The word “Haggadah” itself is a “telling,” a remembering of our story. Like the shards of stone in the ark, we carry both brokenness and healing in ourselves all of the time.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><b><span>As Jews, we constantly integrate brokenness with wholeness — by breaking a </span></b></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><b><span>glass on our happiest day, by celebrating a new year while pleading for forgiveness for the shortcomings of the previous one and by spilling drops of wine to remember that the price of our liberation was that others’ lives were lost. We do not mix our emotions because we don’t know how to just “be happy.” We tell both stories in one breath to understand that they are intricately woven together throughout our histories and our lives. Below is an excerpt of her essay, which was co-written with Washington D.C.’s Rabbi Lauren Holtzblatt:</p>\n\n<p>On Passover, Jews are commanded to tell the story of the Exodus and to see ourselves as having lived through that story, so that we may better learn how to live our lives today. The stories we tell our children shape what they believe to be possible—which is why at Passover, we must tell the stories of the women who played a crucial role in the Exodus narrative.</p>\n\n<p>The Book of Exodus, much like the Book of Genesis, opens in pervasive darkness. Genesis describes the earth as “unformed and void, with darkness over the surface of the deep.”^{<a href=\"https://ajws.org/blog/justice-ruth-bader-ginsburg-on-passover/#1\">1</a>} In Exodus, darkness attends the accession of a new Pharaoh who feared the Israelites and so enslaved them. God alone lights the way out of the darkness in Genesis. But in Exodus, God has many partners, first among them, five brave women.</p>\n\n<p>There is Yocheved, Moses’ mother, and Shifra and Puah, the famous midwives. Each defies Pharaoh’s decree to kill the Israelite baby boys. And there is Miriam, Moses’ sister, about whom the following midrash is taught:</p>\n\n<blockquote>\n<p>[When Miriam’s only brother was Aaron] she prophesied… “my mother is destined to bear a son who will save Israel.” When [Moses] was born the whole house… filled with light[.] [Miriam’s] father arose and kissed her on the head, saying, “My daughter, your prophecy has been fulfilled.” But when they threw [Moses] into the river her father tapped her on the head saying, “Daughter, where is your prophecy?” So it is written, “And [Miriam] stood afar off to know what would be[come of] the latter part of her prophecy.”^{<a href=\"https://ajws.org/blog/justice-ruth-bader-ginsburg-on-passover/#2\">2</a>}</p>\n</blockquote>\n\n<p>Finally, there is Pharaoh’s daughter Batya, who defies her own father and plucks baby Moses out of the Nile. The Midrash reminds us that Batya knew exactly what she doing:</p>\n\n<blockquote>\n<p>When Pharaoh’s daughter’s handmaidens saw that she intended to rescue Moses, they attempted to dissuade her, and persuade her to heed her father. They said to her: “Our mistress, it is the way of the world that when a king issues a decree, it is not heeded by the entire world, but his children and the members of his household do observe it, and you wish to transgress your father’s decree?”^{<a href=\"https://ajws.org/blog/justice-ruth-bader-ginsburg-on-passover/#3\">3</a>}</p>\n</blockquote>\n\n<p>But transgress she did.</p>\n\n<p>These women had a vision leading out of the darkness shrouding their world. They were women of action, prepared to defy authority to make their vision a reality bathed in the light of the day.</p>\n\n<p>Retelling the heroic stories of Yocheved, Shifra, Puah, Miriam and Batya reminds our daughters that with vision and the courage to act, they can carry forward the tradition those intrepid women launched.</p>\n\n<p>While there is much light in today’s world, there remains in our universe disheartening darkness, inhumanity spawned by ignorance and hate. We see horrific examples in the Middle East, parts of Africa, and Ukraine. The name Chag HaMatzot,  the festival of matzah. Perhaps Passover is the “festival of matzah” because matzah is inherently broken, like the first set of tablets. Matzah crumbles as we eat it. It crumbles onto the floor. Somehow it reaches every corner of our homes in one short week, and we clean up the fragments of the broken story of slavery for months after we retell it.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>What do we choose to remember of our own stories?
