"body": "
The story of Passover is the story of the Exodus from Egypt, when God hears the cries of the enslaved Israelites and delivers them from bondage. God sends Moses as God’s representative to both the Israelites and to their tormentor, Pharaoh. After a considerable struggle, including the ten plagues, the Israelites leave Egypt at God’s command.
\n\n
Exodus is the great foundation narrative of the Jewish People, and the Feast of Passover or Pesach is the way we have kept this story alive for every generation of Jews for thousands of years. At the seder, we do more than tell the story—we relive the story.
\n\n
Passover, together with Shavuot and Sukkot, is one of the three pilgrimage festivals where, during the existence of the Temple in Jerusalem, the entire population of Israel would journey to the Temple to make sacrificial offerings to God. As such, it is one of the most significant holidays on the Jewish calendar, and is marked by special prayers and rituals.
\n\n
The central ritual of Passover is the seder, a carefully choreographed ritual meal that typically takes place in the home. A number of symbolic foods are laid out on the table, of which the most important is the matzah, the unleavened “bread of affliction.” The seder follows a script laid out in the Haggadah, a book that tells the story of the redemption from Egypt. Although the Haggadah is a traditional text, many people add to it and revise it in accord with their theology and values.
",

"body": "
Excerpt from Jewish Lights:
\n\n
\"There are many important terms and word-symbols in the Torah that represent essential themes or values. Some of these we can all call to mind, such as mitzvah (commandment), chesed (favor), and b’rit (covenant). However, no single word is more well known, important, or powerful than the simple word hineini. While other key words convey umbrella concepts that undergird the entire biblical worldview, only hineini is spoken. It flows from the essence of the individuals who say it and teaches us much about who they are. It represents the ability to respond to the other within relationships. At times the Rabbis emphasize that we respond to God, to the highest call in the universe, when we are present for those whom we love and know and with whom we are acquainted. Our response to the Divine should lead us to recognizing our obligations to other people. This one word—hineini—has been used by the Rabbis in our traditional texts as well as by contemporary teachers and leaders to capture the essence of relationship from a Jewish perspective and to motivate modern Jews to act on behalf of others.\"
\n
",

Our bellies are full, we have had several glasses of wine, we have told stories and sung songs, and now it is time for the evening to come to a close. At the end of the seder, we honor the tradition of declaring, “Next year in Jerusalem!”
\n\n
This is bittersweet. For some, the recitation of this phrase expresses the anticipation of rebuilding the Temple in Jerusalem and mourning the loss of the Kodesh HaKodashim, for which we still wail at the Kotel in Jerusalem. It also reminds us of the longing we feel for our homeland as members of a global diaspora, and our hope for peace in Israel. It is also an affirmation of hope and of connectedness with Klal Yisrael, the whole of the Jewish community.
\n\n
As we say this together, we imagine a thousand tables stretching out from ours, creating a single table so long it circles the globe, each seat filled with a Jew or an ally, and together, all as one, we say:
\n\n
\"Next year is Yerushalayim!\"
",
