Then something terrible happened. Then was a severe famine. No grain grew. There was no bread to eat. </p>\n\n<p>Some Israelites stayed and starved in Canaan. But others fled. They gathered their belongings and went down to Egypt. There they were settled, tending their herds of sheep and cattle. For a long while, the Israelites grew in number and prospered. </p>\n\n<p>Finally the time of plenty ended. A cruel and selfish pharaoh began to rule over Egypt. This pharaoh was like a god to the Egyptions. </p>\n\n<p>\"I love to build,\" he said. \"The poor people of my land and my captives will be my slaves. They will glorify me by building monuments, temples, and palaces.\"</p>\n\n<p>And so it was. Slaves put up building after building for the pharaoh. But he always wanted more. He dreamed of setting up whole new cities.</p>\n\n<p>\"For this, I need extra workers,\" he said.</p>\n\n<p>Suddenly the pharaoh remembered the Israelites who had come to Egypt from Canaan. He feared their numbers and their power. One day they might rise up against me, he thought, \"I will make them my slaves,\" the pharaoh decided. \"They shall make bricks for my buildings.\"</p>\n\n<p>The pharaoh issued an order to his soldiers. \"Gather together all the Israelite men and boys. Put them to work at hard labor.\"</p>\n\n<p>Soon, the Israelites were toiling under the hot sun of Egypt. Cruel overseers forced them to turn straw and clay into bricks for the pharaoh's cities. Day after day, they sweated in the broiling heat, with little to eat or drink.</p>\n\n<p>\"We refuse to be slaves,\" the Israelites complained bitterly to their guards. \"We are free people. We were our own masters in Canaan.\"</p>\n\n<p>The pharaoh heard that the Israelites were unhappy. But he could not understand why. \"I treat them no worse than I treat my other slaves,\" he said. \"Why do they complain while the other slaves accept their lot?\" </p>\n\n<p>\"They are lazy,\" said the head taskmaster.</p>\n\n<p>\"Then let's make them work harder,\" replied the pharaoh.</p>\n\n<p>Year after year, the pharaoh forced the Israelites to sweat and toil terribly for him. In time, they began to forget that they had once been a free people. Even as they suffered, they stopped complaining.</p>\n\n<p>Still, the pharaoh was worried. The Israelites continued to grow in number. The pharaoh called for the army commander. \"Have every son born to the Israelites thrown into the Nile River,\" he commanded. \"With fewer ISraelites, I will feel safer.\"</p>\n\n<p>Around this time, Yocheved, an Israelite woman, gave birth to a beautiful boy. For three months, she hid him from the pharaoh's soldiers. But then he begame too big to hide.</p>\n\n<p>Yocheved had an idea. \"Let us make a basket for the baby,\" she told her daughter, Miriam. \"We'll fill the cracks with tar so it will float.\"</p>\n\n<p>\"Then what?\" asked Miriam.</p>\n\n<p>Yocheved took a deep breath. \"We'll put the basket among the reeds in the river. The pharaoh's daughter comes down to the river everyday to bathe. Perhaps she will find the boy and care for him.\"</p>\n\n<p>Miriam helped her mother prepare the basket. Carefully they placed the baby inside. Together they set it among the reeds in the river.</p>\n\n<p>\"You hide on the bank,\" Yocheved whispered to Miriam. \"Watch what happens to the child.\" With that, she went away.</p>\n\n<p>Miriam sat and waited. Presently she heard young women talking and laughing. It was the princess and her maidens.</p>\n\n<p>\"Look over there,\" said the princess. \"Isee something in the reeds.\"</p>\n\n<p>\"It looks like a basket,\" the princess ordered.</p>\n\n<p>\"Fetch it for me,\" the princess ordered.</p>\n\n<p>The maid waded into the river and scooped up the basket. She brought it to the princess. On opening it, the princess saw the child.</p>\n\n<p>\"Poor little baby,\" she said. \"He must be one of the Israelite children.\"</p>\n\n<p>The princess thought a moment. \"I do not want him to die,\" she said aloud. \"we must take him back to the palace.\"</p>\n\n<p>\"What will you do then, my lady?\" her maid asked.</p>\n\n<p>\"I will raise him as my own son. Then the Leader returns after hiding it. </p>\n\n<p>The broken Matzah symbolizes that we have are all growing people. Matzah that isn't fragmented means that there is no room to grow. MATZAH:</p>\n\n<p>Matzah is the symbol of our affliction and our freedom.  Legend has it that when Moses and his followers fled Egypt, they moved so quickly that the bread they baked did not have time to rise.  However, scholars have noted that long before the Jews celebrated Passover, farmers of the Middle East celebrated Khag Ha-matsot, the festival of unleavened bread, at this time of year. This was a festival where unleavened bread was made from the new grain harvest that took place at this time of the year. The old fermented dough was thrown out so that last year's grain would not be mixed with this year's. Therefore, the new season began with the eating of unleavened bread--matsah. Later on, the Jewish people incorporated this agricultural festival into the celebration of freedom and renewal we now call Passover.  Let us all eat a piece of matzah.</p>\n\n<p>2. BITTER HERBS</p>\n\n<p>Tradition says that this root is to remind us of the time of our slavery. It is the stimulus in life, reminding us that struggle is better than the complacent acceptance of injustice.  Let us all eat bitter herbs.</p>\n\n<p>3. DIPPING</p>\n\n<p>The first time, the salty taste reminds us of the tears we cried when we were slaves. The second time, the salt water andthe green help us to remember the ocean and green plants and the Earth, from which we get air and water and food that enable us to live.  Let us all dip the parsley in salt water twice.</p>\n\n<p>4. RECLINING</p>\n\n<p>This question goes back to ancient times in Rome, when it was the custom for rich people to eat while lying on a couch leaning on one elbow as slaves and servants fed them. The Jewish people thought of this relaxed type of eating as a sign of freedom and prosperity, so they would lean to one side eating at the Seder on Passover, the festival of freedom.
