Only the dead, their cupped hands filling slowly with the...", "user_image": "", "user_image_original": "", "body": "<p><strong>Red Sea by Aurora Levins Morales</strong></p>\n\n<p>This Passover, who reclines?<br />\nOnly the dead, their cupped hands filling slowly<br />\nwith the red wine of war.  We are not free.</p>\n\n<p>The blood on the doorposts does not protect anyone.<br />\nThey say that other country over there<br />\ndim blue in the twilight<br />\nfarther than the orange stars exploding over our roofs<br />\nis called peace.</p>\n\n<p>The bread of affliction snaps in our hands like bones,<br />\nis dust in our mouths. I want to be more loving. </p>\n\n<p>Often there are good and sufficient reasons for exercising what seems a clean, direct resentment. Again and again I find it hard to hold in check the sharp retort, the biting comeback when it seems that someone has done violence to my self respect and decent regard. How natural it seems to give as good as I get, to take nothing lying down, to announce to all and sundry in a thousand ways that no one can run over me and get away with it.</p>\n\n<p>All this is part of the thicket in which my heart gets caught again and again. Deep within me, I want to be more loving in my heart. To glow with a warmth that will take the chill off a room which I share with those whose lives touch mine in the traffic of my goings and comings. I want to be more loving.</p>\n\n<p>I want to be more loving in my heart. It is often easy to have the idea in mind, to plan to be more loving, to see it with the mind and give ascent to the thought of being loving. This is crystal clear. But I want to be more loving in my heart. I must feel like loving. I must ease the tension in my heart that ejects the sharp barb, the stinging word.</p>\n\n<p>I want to be more loving in my heart, that with unconscious awareness and deliberate intent I shall be a kind, a gracious human being. Thus those who walk the path with me may find it easier to be loving, to be gracious because of the love of God which is increasingly expressed in my living. We left Egypt and are now passing through a narrow place. We can view this pandemic as living enslaved in Egypt or experiencing plagues. We can also view the conditions of our society that don’t care for individuals that are being starkly exposed now as plagues.  </p>\n\n<p>We don’t know how long we’re going to wander through the desert or what the promised land will look like. Rather than only tell the traditional story, we want to make the story relevant to today. The story of Miriam is a story about Love. This cup honors one of the heroines of the Exodus story who loved her brother Moses as she acted as his guardian. Legend tells us she was a midwife who lovingly helped women bring new Life into the world. She loved her brother by being his guardian. She loved her people by using her prophetic powers and by singing up a healing well in the desert.
