PRE-PLASTOVER ACTIVITY: FIND THE HAMETZ

Preparing for Plastover does not mean you need to remove every plastic item from your house! Instead use these guidelines to identify where you could cut back on sin- gle-use plastic during Passover.

What is single-use plastic? Put simply, single-use plastics are goods that are made primarily from fossil fuel–based chemicals (petrochemicals) and are meant to be disposed of right after use—often, in mere minutes. Single-use plastics are most commonly used for packaging and serviceware, such as bottles, wrappers, straws, and bags (via NRDC).

DISCUSS

• When do you use single-use plastic?
• Why is it hard to avoid?
• What are the barriers to replacing single-use plastic?
• Are you already trying to reduce your plastic waste? How?
• Which room do you think will have the most single-use plastic? Which will have the least?
• Why do you think single-use plastic is bad for the environment? What makes it worse than other plastic products that we use?

FIND THE PLASTIC!

• Take our checklist and go from room to room, checking off items in plastic containers.
• Bring a few examples of single-use plastic items back to show the group.

POST PLASTIC HUNT DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

• Did you find more or less single-use plastic than you were expecting?
• What will be the easiest single-use plastic item to eliminate? What will be the hardest?
• What types of foods use more plastic than others?
• How can you replace some of the single-use plastic items you found?
