Are I and my spouse holding down two full time jobs while supervising three young children in their online learning for multiple hours a day? </p>\n\n<p>You are living through an international pandemic. For all of the support you have, for all of the jokes people are making, for all of the new Torah that is being learned... you are experiencing a collective trauma as an individual, within the delimited space of your own home and your own life. You may be managing others' experience of that trauma. You are dealing with challenges you have never faced before. You may feel scared, angry, depressed or lost. </p>\n\n<p>So light the candles, bless the wine and the holiday. Eat the symbols. Be together. Talk about some things. Read some things. Be energized or be tired. Do things you never did before. Do the minimum, do the maximum. But go to sleep knowing you have fulfilled your obligation. </p>\n\n<p>You do not have to make up for the Seder you're not having, or the Seder you wish you could have had. Do this year's Seder however that works for you this year. Do your best to keep yourself and your family healthy and safe. Connect to the themes of Passover - getting out of narrow places, celebrating life, gratitude, remembering our obligations to each other and all others. You are allowed to have a Shvach seder. Because COVID-19 is a terrible pandemic, but not a plague. The most dangerous part of associating COVID-19 with the ten plagues is not about the malady’s origin, but about our response. When the Israelites sequestered in their homes and painted blood on their doorposts,<br />\nthey did it to distinguish themselves from the Egyptian households. When we stay home, it is instead a recognition that there are no distinctions to this disease; whatever we do is not primarily for ourselves, but for our neighbors and coworkers and others we do not know. Our houses have no blood on the doorpost, neither for protection nor identification.</p>\n\n<p>We await not a personal<br />\nsalvation, but an all-clear for everyone. What's a Seder...? Thousands of years ago our people escaped slavery in Egypt. As a way to commemorate our salvation, the Jewish scholars have created a Seder (seder means order in Hebrew). It's basically a 15-step guide filled with symbolism, stories, rituals, and a little bit of fun. There's one leader but everyone participates.</p>\n\n<p>2. Like the reading from the Introduction... We're allowed to have a Shvach Seder. Too hard to get a shankbone for your Seder plate? Don't even have a Seder plate?? No worries. Between every one on this Zoom call we collectively have a full Seder plate. Passover is about memory so let's all remember last year's Seder plate if you don't have one for yourself.</p>\n\n<p>3. The answer to the age old-question of \"Why is this night different from all other nights?\" is quite obvious this year. We're changing the order up just a little bit, but do whatever feels right for you. We'll do the whole Seder, then have your meal! Feel free to stay on Zoom so it feels like we're together, or if you don't want to watch other people eat, hop off an enjoy on your own.</p>\n\n<p>4. During the Seder, there's a tradition we don't fill our own glasses of wine. Having our wine poured for us is one of the symbolic demonstrations during the Seder that we are free and not slaves. If you are alone, just imagine someone is pouring for you and next Seder I will personally pour all 4 of your glasses.</p>\n\n<p>5. Another symoblic demonstration of our freedom from slavery is we all recline in our chairs. Some people grab a pillow, others a comfy chair with arms, some even have full Seder's in their beds. The future is female, states the rallying cry, and there’s nowhere that’s been more evident than in the last 100 years, as female activists have been the champions of social change from the suffragettes to #MeToo, #TimesUp, and the Women’s March. That’s just the movement side, though —underlying it all there are thousands, if not millions, of women just like you and me out there <a href=\"https://www.heyalma.com/3-reasons-gun-control-womens-issue/\"><strong>fighting for change</strong></a> in our personal lives, our schools, our workplaces, our homes, our communities, our societies.</p>\n\n<p>Luckily we have some great role models to follow. Well, that’s where our Rabbinic statement comes to show just how powerful the Israelite ladies were in the first place. Miriam and her posse had a plan, and that plan involved redemption. You may be managing others' experience of that trauma. You are dealing with challenges you have never faced before. You may feel scared, angry, depressed or lost. </p>\n\n<p>So light the candles, bless the wine and the holiday. Eat the symbols. Be together. Talk about some things. Read some things. Be energized or be tired. Do things you never did before. Do the minimum, do the maximum. But go to sleep knowing you have fulfilled your obligation. </p>\n\n<p>You do not have to make up for the Seder you're not having, or the Seder you wish you could have had. Do this year's Seder however that works for you this year. Do your best to keep yourself and your family healthy and safe. Connect to the themes of Passover - getting out of narrow places, celebrating life, gratitude, remembering our obligations to each other and all others. You are allowed to have a Shvach seder. Everyone eats it and nobody likes it, and there’s always one last box that sits untouched in a cupboard for months afterward, lonely, broken, and utterly unloved. </p>\n\n<p>Of course it is practically impossible for free and fortunate people such as ourselves to envision a life of slavery, but as an excersise in imagining our ancestors, place a large square of matzah in your mouth and eat it. It is likely that there were a fair number of Egyptians who said, “I see no reason to detain these Hebrew slaves any longer than we already have,” and who nevertheless found themselves drinking blood instead of water. By the time frogs had hopped through the land, and gnats and flies had strung everything in sight, there were doubtless more Egyptians who said, “You know, I would rather do without slaves than have all of these terrible pests around,” and who still suffered from pestilence and boils. By the time the threats came from the sky - hail, locusts, and darkness - there couldn’t have been too many Egyptians who were in favor of keeping the Jews in bondage, except the stubborn Pharaoh, who only changed his mind when his own son, who by this point was probably an abolitionist - a word which here means “in favor of ending slavery if only because he was sick of plagues” - was slaughtered as part of th tenth and final plague.
