A Seder, literally meaning “Order” is the ancient Jewish ritual which occurs on the first night of Passover. A Seder is, like it’s name suggests, an orderly thing which has a set rubric of events, activities, sayings, prayers, and traditions. We eat specific foods at specific times, recall ancient debates and teachings, recite blessings, and recreate the Exodus from Egypt. It’s all here in the Haggadah- the Passover book- and there’s so much of it! </b></p>\n\n<p><b>It’s no wonder a Seder is intimidating! The ‘good ones’ are so full of things it seems impossible to remember each moving piece, how could someone new to hosting possibly live up to what they remember seder ‘used to be like.’ And the ‘bad ones’ are so long and boring, it seems like you are checking off boxes as you work your way through a book that seems to meander more than the Israelites in the wilderness. </b></p>\n\n<p><b>But there's good news, because the true heart of the Seder isn't all of the small moving pieces or getting it all 'right'. Rather it's the Magid. The Story. The beating heart of the Haggadah. While people hear “the story” and they assume that this means the story of the Exodus, the Seder actually does something really incredible! Passover, through the Seder, teaches you its own biography. The ‘story’ is actually the story... of the Seder! The Seder manages to create its own mythology, but having you learn about it as you perform it. And nothing teaches us this lesson more than this iconic line... \"Each person must seem themselves as if they had gone out of Egypt!\"</b></p>\n\n<p><b>That’s an incredible bit of Inception style brain trickery. But it also leaves room for an astonishing amount of freedom. After all, here you are, about to recite the story for what might be your very first time.
