They're one question in four parts: What makes this night so different that we do each of these odd things? And we're not actually doing each of the four things -- most of us aren't reclining, and we are eating vegetables other than the marror.</p>\n\n<p>But still, the question remains: what is so special about this night that Jews around the world (and, often, their friends and non-Jewish members of the family) get together to eat and tell this story?</p>\n\n<p>The tale of the Exodus -- whether or not it actually happened quite as told in the Bible -- is the basic origin story of the Jewish people. When Jacob and his sons first went down from what is now Israel to Egypt, they were not much more than a large family. Once in Egypt, they were set up in a company town. The people in charge there (mostly under commands from their brother Joseph) got them trapped in a cycle of debt from which they couldn't escape, and they eventually became slaves. As we'll discuss in more detail later, after four hundred years they broke free. They were now a large group of many thousands of people in many tribes. Gathered in the desert for another forty years, they unified into a people and returned to the land from which their ancestors had come.</p>\n\n<p>The scholar James Kugel studied the history of those times, and, in his book <em>How to Read the Bible,</em> writes of how he learned that the Biblical story doesn't quite line up with what archaeologists have found. When asked how he can continue to be a devout Jew after learning about this, he said this: Whether the story exactly happened doesn't really matter. Their students, finding them still at the table, still talking, said \"It's already morning, and time to recite the morning prayers!\"</p>\n\n<p>Fortunately, they responded, so the students didn't have to call to each of them specifically and didn't have to pronounce all their names.</p>\n\n<p>But there's a story behind the story. As the Velveteen Rabbi tells us, \"Context is everything.\"</p>\n\n<blockquote>\n<p>B’nei Brak was the headquarters of the rebellion against Roman occupation, a rebellion of which Rabbi Akiva was a leader. Because of rebel activities, the Roman authorities had forbidden gatherings of Jews. The seder described in this passage was a chance not only to discuss the liberation from Egypt—but also to plan a strategy of resistance against Roman occupation. The students were standing guard, ready to caution the rabbis to disband at daybreak, lest they be caught.</p>\n\n<p>This tale may be read as an encouragement to become so joyfully immersed in the seder that we don’t notice the passing of time...and it may also be read as a story of how one liberation begets another. Celebrating our freedom from servitude can be a radical act. The Rabbis spoke of four different children to whom you have to tell the story.</p>\n\n<p>First is the <strong>Wise Child.</strong> This child understands the stories and has gotten deeply into the details of observance. If the child asks about the fine points of the holiday and its history, answer with as much information as you can. (It's OK if you don't know all the facts about the Twelve Tribes' flags.)</p>\n\n<p>The <strong>Irreverent Child</strong> sneers \"What does all this mean to you?\" saying \"to you\" as if outside of and above it all. The Rabbis said that you should snap back and say \"This is because of what God did for me when I went out of Egypt. With that attitude, you wouldn't have deserved to be freed, and would have been left behind.\" But listen closely to how the child asked the question; as it says in the book of Proverbs, \"A soft answer turns away wrath.\" If you explain what it does mean in your life, there's a chance that the child may come to appreciate it.</p>\n\n<p>In the words of Bob Dylan, the <strong>Simple Child</strong> will know that something's happening, but won't know what it is. Jacob had a whole lot of sons (and at least one daughter).</p>\n\n<p>During a famine, Jacob and his sons moved to Egypt.</p>\n\n<p>Fast forward four hundred years, That family grew to become thousands of people, and had become slaves to Egypt's king, the Pharaoh. They were probably involved in building the pyramids.</p>\n\n<p>The Pharaoh was known for sneaky management practices. For example, according to legend, he would occasionally come down and work alongside the slaves for a day. Wanting to show off for the boss, they would work harder than ever, often setting new records for what they would produce. The Pharaoh would then announce that what they had done that day would be their new minimum productivity quota. They would be punished on any day that they produced less than that.</p>\n\n<p>Once (according to Exodus, chapter five), they asked Pharaoh for permission to go out to the desert for three days for a religious festival. Pharaoh said that if they wanted to go on vacation, they were slacking and not busy enough. While they had been making bricks for their buildings, the straw had been brought to them. The new executive order decreed that from then on they would have to harvest the straw themselves -- but they would still have to make as many bricks as they had before.</p>\n\n<p>One day, the Pharaoh's wizards told him that a boy would soon be born to the Hebrew slaves who would overthrow him. He decreed that all male babies born to them were to be killed immediately. </p>\n\n<p>With the help of her midwives, a woman from the tribe of Levi hid her newborn son, placing him in a basket in the Nile. His sister, Miriam, knew that Pharaoh's daughter bathed in the river at that spot. When the princess found the basket, Miriam suggested that she get their mother to nurse him. The princess hired the baby's real mother to nurse him and adopted him as her own son. She named him Moses.</p>\n\n<p>Years later, Moses saw an Egyptian taskmaster beating a Hebrew slave. He killed the taskmaster and hid him in the sand. When he found out that people knew that he had done it, he fled to the land of Midian, nearby.</p>\n\n<p>When that Pharaoh died, his son took over. He was even worse. </p>\n\n<p>When Moses was tending his new family's flock of sheep in the mountain's he saw a bush that was on fire but wasn't consumed. He heard the voice of God coming from the flames. The voice told him that it was time to go back to Egypt and liberate the slaves.</p>\n\n<p>Moses went to the new Pharaoh and asked him to free the slaves. Pharaoh didn't. He showed him several miraculous tricks to convince him that God was on their side. Much of the volcanic ash would have fallen over Egypt. Ash from the volcano has been found in the Nile River.</p>\n\n<p>Ash falling into the river would have changed the pH level of the water, increasing the amount of algae. A common algae problem, known as the Red Tide, can cause the water of a river to look like <strong>blood</strong>.</p>\n\n<p>The algae bloom would have killed many of the fish in the river. The fish eat frog eggs. With no fish, an enormous number of these would have hatched into tadpoles and then <strong>frogs</strong>.</p>\n\n<p>When the frogs died off, perhaps from over-population, <strong>lice</strong> and other bugs would have fed on them.</p>\n\n<p>The invasion of wild animals doesn't fit well -- but a lot of mostly Christian scholars (according to Wikipedia) translate \"arov\" as <strong>flies</strong>, which would fit in the the bugs of the previous plague. (Surprisingly, there was no plague of cats, which would have been ironically appropriate. The Egyptians loved cats.)</p>\n\n<p>So: lots of dead fish and flies are around, plus lice, flies, and maybe other animals invading what had been human space. It's <strong>pestilence</strong> time.</p>\n\n<p>The next one is pretty easy. The bug bites and pestilence could have led to <strong>boils</strong>.</p>\n\n<p>Ash high in the air can cause water to freeze around it, causing <strong>hail</strong>. Legends also speak of fire in the air. Volcanos can cause red lightning.</p>\n\n<p>The hail, once it melted in the hot Egyptian air, would have saturated the ground. Locusts love damp weather, since they bury their eggs in the ground. All that precipitation could have led to a record number of <strong>locusts</strong>.</p>\n\n<p>Ash in the air from volcanoes has also been known to block out the sun for days at a time. Hence: <strong>darkness</strong>.</p>\n\n<p>In Egypt, the <strong>first born</strong> of families got to eat first and sometime were the only ones to eat in a famine. After the locusts ate everything, the only grain left might have been in vaults. With all that dampness and locust droppings everywhere, the grain could have developed poisonous mold. If the first born ate before everyone else, they would have been the ones killed by the grain.</p>\n\n<p>So there could be an explanation for the plagues. By the time that they got there, Pharaoh changed his mind yet again, and came after them to get them back.</p>\n\n<p>By yet another miracle, the water in the sea parted for Moses, the people marched across. Once they were safe on the other side, and Pharaoh's army had all followed them onto the sea bed, the waters closed back up, drowning the army.</p>\n\n<p>(Another myth, in keeping with the spilling of the wine earlier: when the army drowned, a chorus of angels began to sing God's praises. The Passover sacrifice each year consisted of a sheaf of the first grain harvested that spring, about seven pounds of flour mixed with fine olive oil, about a quart of wine, and one lamb, a year old, without defects.</p>\n\n<p>But the symbol of the lamb goes back to just before the Exodus. The Bible said that the plague of the death of the first-born was carried out by the Angel of Death, who flew over all the houses and slew people within them. The Hebrews were told to mark the doorposts of their houses with the blood of lambs, so the Angel of Death would know not to hit their houses.</p>\n\n<p>The symbol of the sacrifice of the lamb got a lot more involved in Christianity, but that's a whole other story.</p>\n\n<p>And why do we have a chicken neck instead of the shankbone of the lamb? Some Jewish traditions insist that, because of the extreme sacredness of the symbol, we can't use a real one until, at least, the Temple is restored. Other Jewish traditions insist that, because of the extreme sacredness of the symbol. we <em>must</em> use a real one. Both opinions are considered valid. One reason that the Jewish people have survived is that we can handle these differences of opinion without breaking off into schisms, excommunications, and religious wars. You probably already knew that. But why do we eat it now?</p>\n\n<p>Most significantly, this is what the Hebrew slaves had to eat when they fled from Egypt. (The Bible doesn't say why, if they were able to carry all that dough as well as the gold and silver that the Egyptians handed them, they didn't also take some yeast, but maybe they baked bread differently from how we're used to doing it.)</p>\n\n<p>As we said earlier, <em>matzah</em> is the bread of affliction, the bread of poverty. Compared to much other bread, <em>matzah</em> is, well, boring. It's fun to eat at the seder table and as an option at other times in the year, but when you're stuck eating it for an entire week, it's easy to get tired of it. (And the crumbs get into everything.)</p>\n\n<p>And that's the point. <em>Matzah</em> helps us remember that, compared to a lot of other people in the world and even nearby, we're privileged in many ways that might not be otherwise apparent. Health issues aside (and those can indeed be a huge restriction), we can pretty much eat whatever we want, whenever we want it. Any food that we can imagine is pretty much within reach.</p>\n\n<p>But a lot of people have no choice in what to eat or the conditions in which they live. They are at the mercy of weather conditions, political crises, wars, the lack of education, and a myriad of other causes that mean that they can eat only what they can get at with limited resources. In much of the US, we have (at least at the moment) organizations and agencies working to try to fill in the gaps and to get people the resources that they need, but it's not so in remote locations and food deserts here, or in many other places in the world.</p>\n\n<p>Being limited to Passover foods for a week makes us more mindful of our eating and the resources that we have available. And the best thing is that it lasts only a week. After the limitations we take on during Passover, regular food tastes better. Later on, we will taste it twice, once mixed with the sweet <em>kharoset</em> and one as a sort of small sandwich on matzah, </p>\n\n<p>Our lives are made up of elements that mix, contrast, and blend. This family is a blend of people coming from different lands, religions, and traditions. This country is made up of a wide tapestry of people all of whom either immigrated to this land or are descended from people who did. It's also a religious service and a celebration.</p>\n\n<p>The text for the Seder is in this book, known as the <em>haggadah</em> . There's a traditional structure that most <em>haggadot</em> (that's the plural form) follow. Everyone changes it, though, adding new materials and leaving out others, while keeping to that structure. The Seder does include a meal, as well as more events, readings, and songs after it, which are as important and those that come before.</p>\n\n<p>Much of the text in this <em>haggadah</em> was written specifically for this seder. Translations of texts from the Bible are either drawn or adapted from the New International Version. Other sections are drawn from the Reconstructionist movement's <em>New Haggadah </em> from 1941, which has been this family core <em>haggadah</em> for decades. Still others are drawn from the resources at <u>haggadot.com</u>, which also provided the tools and template used to put it together, and from the writings of Rabbi Rachel Barenblat (also known as The Velveteen Rabbi). And some resources and songs are from places that may come as a surprise. You can tell where each section came from by looking at the Source information under its title.</p>\n\n<p>The texts are meant to encourage thought and conversation (though we'll also want to keep things moving, so extended conversations might work best during the meal itself or after the Seder).</p>\n\n<p>There are a lot of Hebrew words in the <em>haggadah</em> , but don't worry: almost every word in Hebrew is transliterated into English letters and also translated into English. Since the actual commandment in the Bible say that the sacrificed Paschal Lamb should be eaten with matzah and maror, he would make a sandwich of some of the lamb, with a bit of maror, between pieces of matzah. Since we don't sacrifice a lamb anymore (hence the aforementioned chicken neck on the Seder plate), we just eat a bit more maror between two small pieces of matzah.</p>\n\n<p>Question: Why is a sandwich not known as a \"hillel,\" even in Hebrew? Because languages are weird.</p>\n\n<p>Once we've passed around the matzah and maror, there's actually no additional blessing for this, since it's another way to fulfill the previous blessing. Rabbi Tarfon (one of the unpronounceable Rabbis who stayed up all night talking) insisted that there should be five cups, because of a fifth promise that God made to the Hebrew slaves.</p>\n\n<p>Tradition settled on four cups, but there's a fifth on the table: the Cup of Elijah.</p>\n\n<p>Legend has it that the prophet Elijah travels the Earth on Passover visiting each Seder and drinking a sip from his cup at each one. (NORAD Radar doesn't track him, though, probably because most of those who would be interested aren't watching TV at the time. And he probably travels more subtly than in the fiery chariot in which he left the earth.)</p>\n\n<p>Elijah is said to be the messenger of God, who never died, and will come back to us to announce the coming of the Messiah.
