"body": "
Dayenu recalls every step in our path to redemption: departure from Egypt, the splitting of the sea, sustenance in the wilderness, the giving of the Torah and our arrival in the land of Israel. And although we express gratitude for each moment by saying, “It would have been enough,” we know that all of these steps were necessary to achieve full freedom. Had the journey ended with the leaving of Egypt, we would not be free people.
\n\n
As today’s freedom-seekers depart their own Egypts, they contend with obstacles as formidable as the raging sea and find the strength to persevere through the challenges that lie ahead. We stand with them proudly, as Jews, through the duration of their journeys.
\n\n\n\n
It is critical that we support survivors of disasters, wars and conflicts until they are able to rebuild their lives. We must stand with religious and ethnic minorities as long as the threat of violence or genocide rages. We must fight for the rights of women, girls and LGBT people until true equality is achieved. And we must persevere in defending the precious natural resources that sustain our world.
\n\n\n\n
Just as the Israelites needed support at each step of their journey, so too do those around the world who persist in lifting the shadow of suffering and oppression.
\n\n
If the world hears the cries of the oppressed, but does not come to their aid …
\n\n
It will not be enough.
\n\n
If we empower our brothers and sisters to escape violence, but fail to offer them refuge …
\n\n
It will not be enough.
\n\n
If our generosity supports the needs of today, but forsakes the needs of tomorrow …
\n\n
It will not be enough.
\n\n
However, if we persevere until stability, peace and justice have been attained …
\n\n
Dayenu! Then it will be enough.
\n\n\n",

"body": "
In humans, bitter herbs can stimulate the appetite, aid digestion, tone up the liver and kidneys, and derail a host of diseases. Bitter melon, in particular, has been shown in studies to have a remarkable capacity to lower blood sugar, owing partly to chemicals such as beta-sitosterol-d-glucoside and charantin; and to ease rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus, because of immunosuppressive constituents such as alpha- and beta-momorcharin. Its phytochemicals, lanosterol and xeaxanthin, are considered to be cancer-preventive, and the saponin diosgenin helps to protect the liver. Not surprisingly, given the role of bitter chemicals in plant defense, bitter melon also has antibiotic properties.
\n\n\n\n
Bitter herbs, in general, can galvanize our digestive systems to function at their peak by stimulating the production of digestive juices and the dispatch of stored bile (necessary for fat digestion and sugar metabolism) from the gallbladder to the small intestine after meals, thus aiding nutrient assimilation. Bile itself is a natural laxative.
\n\n\n",

As we remember the liberation from Egypt, we also recognize the stirrings of spring and rebirth happening in the world around us. The symbols on our table bring together elements of both kinds of celebration.
\n\n\n\n
We now take a vegetable, representing our joy at the dawning of spring after our long, cold winter. Most families use a green vegetable, such as parsley or celery, but some families from Eastern Europe have a tradition of using a boiled potato since greens were hard to come by at Passover time. Whatever symbol of spring and sustenance we’re using, we now dip it into salt water, a symbol of the tears our ancestors shed as slaves. Before we eat it, we recite a short blessing:
\n\n
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ, אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, בּוֹרֵא פְּרִי הָאֲדָמָה
\n\n\n\n
Baruch Atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech ha-olam, borei p’ree ha-adama.
\n\n
We praise God, Ruler of Everything, who creates the fruits of the earth.
\n",

Hafiz' Spring: A Poem
Haggadah Section: Karpas
- Spring and all its flowers
- It is time for celebration, not for lying low;
- You too -- weed out those roots of sadness from your heart.
- The Sabaa wind arrives;
- and in deep resonance, the flower
- passionately rips open its garments,
- thrusting itself from itself.
- The Way of Truth, learn from the clarity of water,
- Learn freedom from the spreading grass.
- Pay close attention to the artistry of the Sabaa wind,
- that wafts in pollen from afar,
- And ripples the beautiful tresses
- of the fields of hyacinth flowers.
- From the privacy of the harem, the virgin bud slips out,
- revealing herself under the morning star,
- branding your heart and your faith
- with beauty.
- And frenzied bulbul flies madly out of the House of Sadness
- to unite with the flowers;
- its love-crazed cry like a thousand-trumpet blast.
- Hafez says, and the experienced old ones concur:
- All you really need
- is to tell those Stories
- of the Fair Ones and the Goblet of Wine.
