We act as if we are going to begin the meal but then we realize that we can’t – we can’t really eat this meal until we understand it, until we tell the story of the exodus from Egypt. Photograph: Alamy\n\nLast April, Sam and Ruth Borin travelled 200 miles from their home in York to Kent, to mark the start of the Jewish festival of Pesach, or Passover, with the rabbi who had conducted their wedding. Friends and members of the rabbi’s extended family crowded round the table for the <a href=\"https://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/apr/03/passover-seder-jewish-ritual-dinner\">traditional Seder feast</a>, served on the first night of the holiday.\n\nBy tradition, the youngest person present starts the ritual by asking four questions, which are the cue for the maggid, the telling of the story of the Jews’ exodus from slavery in Egypt. Among the foods consumed over a long evening of eating, singing and reading aloud are dry matzo biscuits, vegetables dipped in salt water (to represent tears), and bitter herbs.\n\nThis year, Passover will be rather different for the Borins and millions of other Jewish families. Instead of vast gatherings of family and friends, many Seder feasts will be held at tables for four, two or even one. “It will just be me and my wife this year,” said Sam Borin. “It will feel very weird, but it’s out of the question to invite people.”The Borins are self-isolating after Ruth developed a fever. Their quarantine will end a day or two before Passover begins on 8 April. “So we will have a chance to go to the supermarket to buy matzo.” They, along with others, accept that they may not be able to source traditional Passover foods such as gefilte fish and matzo ball soup.\n\nThis year’s unusual circumstances have led the London Beth Din, or religious court, to issue a list of products not made under special supervision that Jews will be permitted to eat.\n\nThe “kosher for Passover” label usually appears on many foodstuffs in Jewish groceries and delis, indicating that a product has met the strict requirements of the eight-day festival. Chametz – any product made from grains that have come into contact with water and been allowed to ferment – is forbidden.\n\nRabbi Jeremy Conway, of the kashrut division London Beth Din, said: “We are acutely aware of the pressures on individuals and families, particularly on older, vulnerable and isolated members. We already know why this Seder night will be different from all other nights, and this Pesach unlike any other. The kashrut division has been working overtime to support kosher shops and manufacturers, as well as to put together new guidelines just for this Pesach, for those without access to fully supervised products.\n\n\n“This list should be used when regular supervised products are not available, or for people who are older or in isolation, and unable to go shopping or have Pesach products delivered.”\n\n\nOther rabbinical organisations have issued Passover guidelines. An umbrella group in the US has urged Jews to cancel their travel plans. “Everyone must plan to celebrate Pesach where they are currently,” it said.\n\nOrthodox rabbis in Jerusalem have given special dispensation for people to use Zoom video conferencing on Seder night to connect with one another. However, families must turn on their device and open the Zoom app before sundown to comply with the prohibition on the use of electricity, computers and phones on holidays.\n\nThe rabbis said this was “to remove the sadness from seniors and the elderly and to give them motivation to keep fighting”.\n\nBen Rich, a member of the York Liberal Jewish Community, said: “The expectation is that you gather your family and anyone who hasn’t got anywhere to go. We typically have about 20 people, but this year our family is going to meet by Zoom.”\n\nRabbi Laura Janner-Klausner, senior rabbi to Reform Judaism, will be streaming Seder to hundreds, although there will be only a handful at her table. “What’s happening right now is hard,” she said, “and there is a real fear of losing people. What we have been is devoted to the idea that we deserve to be.\n\nBy Alana Newhouse\n\nMs. Newhouse is the editor in chief of Tablet Magazine, which just published “<a href=\"https://www.amazon.com/Very-Unorthodox-Haggadah-Alana-Newhouse/dp/1579659071\">The Passover Haggadah: An Ancient Story for Modern Times</a>.\n\n\nThis year, Passover falls at the beginning of April — smack in the middle of what some experts estimate will be the peak of the coronavirus pandemic in America. It’s not just the timing of the holiday — built around a retelling of the Jews’ exodus from slavery in Egypt — that feels off. It’s that every aspect of its story and rituals now seems almost cruelly ironic.\n\nThe Passover Seder centers on the experience of being thrust out of our homes, but these days we feel trapped inside of them. The story involves miraculous plagues that saved us; today we pray for the end of one. There’s the commandment to clean our homes of all non-Passover food, which we just spent innumerable hours and dollars hoarding.\n\nThen there’s the real heartbreaker: The Seder is when we traditionally gather with family, friends and even strangers. “Let all who are hungry come and eat,” we say. These days, many of us can’t even be in the same house as our own parents or children. We don’t come within six feet of strangers.\n\nAnd yet, there will still be Passover. Indeed, I’ve come to think of Passover as the stem cell of the Jewish people, a reserve of core source material with the proven ability to generate new meaning and solace in circumstances even more extreme than what we are living through now.\n\nPerhaps you’re disappointed because you can’t celebrate the way we’re used to. But do you also remember matzo, the unleavened cracker we eat because Jews rushed out of their homes before their bread could rise? The entire holiday is rooted in glorifying a moment when life unfolded in very unexpected ways — and human beings found meaning, even liberation, in it.\n\nThe Bible includes various relevant mentions of Passover: One, in Exodus, of the Feast of the Passover, and several others (in Exodus, Leviticus and Deuteronomy) of the Feast of the Unleavened Bread. Historians believe these were originally maintained by two distinct segments of Israelite society, for whom spring meant slightly different things. For the seminomadic part of the community, it was a signal that it was time to start moving again; but before doing so they would sacrifice a lamb to ward off evil spirits that might block their path. For the settled folks, it was an agricultural holiday, a joyful welcoming of the incoming spring harvest.\n\nMost scholars believe the two holidays were eventually combined in 622 B.C.E. — when, on the orders of Josiah, the king of Judah, a national celebration emerged, which had at its heart a pilgrimage to the Temple and the killing of a Pascal lamb. Intended or not, the process looks poetic in hindsight: Elements were taken from each of the previous commemorations — the sacrifice from the former, the joy from the latter — and a Jewish future was made.\n\nIt didn’t last. Or rather, the Temple didn’t, but Passover certainly did. After Jerusalem was sacked in 586 B.C.E., the Jews were forced out of Judea into what became known as the Babylonian Exile, taking with them this powerful reminder that a people who had been brought out of exile to freedom might once again retrace that journey.\n\nMore than 2,500 years later, the Passover Seder has not simply survived. It is now, by a long shot, the most popular Jewish religious observance. And what it is, essentially, is an agglomeration of a long and global inheritance. The basic order of the evening stretches back to the third or fourth century; we end the night with a set of group songs from the 15th century; some of us whip one another with scallions during the song “Dayenu,” a tradition designed by Persian Jews; and we all make different kinds of charoset, the sweet paste meant to signify the mortar used by the Jewish slaves. Italian Jews use eggs. <a href=\"https://100jewishfoods.tabletmag.com/charoset/\">Gibraltan Jews</a> make theirs with the dust of ground bricks. And African-American Jews incorporate sugar cane, and cocoa powder, the crops of American slavery.\n\nRabbis, scholars and communal leaders differ on exactly why Passover maintains this enduring power. Some argue that it is simply central to the religion — one of the three times a year when the ancient Israelites would make that pilgrimage to the temple in Jerusalem. Others point to the accessibility of the Seder ritual itself, which allows people of varying levels of knowledge and experience, including non-Jews, to participate.\n\nPart of the credit, I believe, goes to the Haggadah, the text at the heart of the ritual. Less a prayer book than a step-by-step guide, the Haggadah sets out the order of how one is to fulfill the commandment of telling one’s children about the liberation of the Jews from slavery in Egypt — through a set of now-iconic blessings, parables, symbolic foods and songs, and with the specific encouragement for participants to question and challenge the script. Ten Plagues! Four Sons! Bitter herbs! Why Is This Night Different From All Others? There is in this one evening the roots of so much of what reads as Jewish, to us and others: the drama, the humor, the contrariness, the chosenness, the enough-already-ness.\n\nUnlike the Torah or Talmud, which are considered inviolate, the Haggadah developed as a kind of semi-codified artifact, customized by individual Jewish communities throughout history.\n\nRecently, some of my colleagues and I set out to create an American Haggadah — one that included the entirety of the traditional text along with elements that speak to the particular history and experience of Jews in this time and place, like entries not just on the Four Sons but also the Four Daughters; essays on food waste; cocktails based on the Ten Plagues; and more.\n\nWhile putting it together, I was struck by something I hadn’t ever fully explored — that of all the things included in the universe of Haggadahs, one thing is conspicuously missing from them all: the story of the exodus itself.\n\n“The Haggadah is like the theater sets and costumes and reviews of a play, without the actual play,” Rabbi Noa Kushner of San Francisco told me recently, about a month before the coronavirus began derailing everyone’s Passover plans. All of a sudden the quixotic words of my high school rabbi came back to me: “Reading the exodus is for the already free.”\n\nMost Jews throughout history have not been free, whether from murderous regimes or famines or pandemics. What we have been is devoted to the idea that we deserve to be. “The Haggadah’s purpose is not, in fact, to present a narrative,” Rabbi Mendel Herson, associate dean of the Rabbinical College of America, explained to me. “It’s a how-to guide to finding our own personal liberation.”\n\nThe text of the Haggadah is not a retelling of the liberation story itself but a record of agreements and disagreements among its interpreters, because it is not the God-driven part of the story that we should be focused on but the human-driven one. God will come to help when God comes to help; the question is what we do between now and then.\n\nThis is why Jews observed Passover in the basement “<a href=\"https://www.rabbibarbara.com/secret-passover-tradition\">cantinas</a>” of righteous friends during the Inquisition; they kept it during the Crusades, even as evil people around them used it to manufacture the deadly, and enduring, libel about matzo baked with the blood of Christian children; and they kept it throughout the Holocaust — in <a href=\"https://www.yadvashem.org/yv/en/exhibitions/warsaw_ghetto_testimonies/last_passover.asp\">ghettos</a> and concentration camps and forests.\n\nAs I write this, I am looking at a <a href=\"https://www.yadvashem.org/yv/en/exhibitions/passover/index.asp?utm_source=social&utm_medium=tw#prettyPhoto%5Bgallery100%5D/11/\">heart-stopping picture</a> of five people baking matzo in 1943, in a secret oven they built beneath the Lodz ghetto. These were Jews made slaves again in modern times, insisting on celebrating their God-given right to freedom even as they were being denied their earthly equivalent. It is the smile of someone who knows she is doing something miraculous by making Passover her own.\n\nOur circumstances are much less dire than hers, but our task this year is the same. Last week, a group of major Orthodox rabbis in Israel announced that they would permit people to use Zoom videoconferencing for their Seders — a previously unimaginable accommodation to stringent Jewish law. Most important, it leaves helpers healthier. We often think of altruism as a transfer, in which one person sacrifices to benefit another. But well-being is not a zero-sum game: When we devote our time and money to other people, we feel happier. In older adults, volunteering is correlated with improvements in health and even decreased mortality.\n\nKindness can also decrease our stress and soothe us in moments of great pain. The psychologist and Holocaust survivor Victor Frankl wrote that “suffering ceases to be suffering at the moment it finds a meaning, such as the meaning of a sacrifice.” Many survivors of assault, war and addiction report that helping others speeds their own recovery. They discover strength in themselves that they might not have noticed before; they find purpose in what they went through and feel less helpless. Right now, that’s exactly what many of us need.\n\nHurricanes last a few hours, earthquakes are over in minutes and some terrorist attacks take place in just seconds. They are terrifying exclamation marks in our lives, which bring us together in a moment of shared struggle. Then they fade, and the lines that normally divide us slowly reappear. The Covid-19 catastrophe will stretch out for much longer, and the sustained struggle ahead presents an opportunity to reboot our culture and turn this interconnected moment into a habit.\n\n---\n\nMaybe that's one reason why the ancient Jews needed an entire generation to go by before they could enter the promised land. Clearly by the time we were at Sinai, we hadn't yet built a habit of internalizing the lessons learned from generations of slavery in the context of a free people. It represents the sustained struggle (in a free context) to build this habit.\n\nPassover provides us a way to find meaning in our suffering. To make us feel less helpless and give us the tools to leverage our previous oppression to make the world better for other oppressed peoples.\n\nThe desire to create order when chaos exists is human nature. The question is, will we go back to the order we've always lived with or create a new order that better aligns with our values and goals as a society?\n\nThis passage makes an interesting point that crises like 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina were so quick that it was easy to fall back into the default of normalcy. COVID-19 presents such a sustained upending of things that we may forget what \"normal\" was like when this is all over. And that may be a good thing! Chaos is the uncertainty of our daily lives, the constant barrage of information and requests and tasks and messages we’re swarmed with, the uncertainty of the global pandemic and national politics, of our finances and global economy, of changing communities and our everchanging lives.\n\nChaos is all around us, and it can stress us out. It causes anxiety, depression, frustration, anger, procrastination, constant distraction, and the seeking of comforts like social media, food, shopping, games and more.\n\nBut what if we didn’t need to run to comfort or fear the chaos?\n\nWhat if we could just be still, and find calmness and stillness with the uncertainty swirling around us?\n\nA student recently said he would like to “dance with chaos.” I think that’s a beautiful idea. Let’s embrace the uncertainty. Practice with it. The idea of one God, invisible and all-powerful, inspired him to leave his family and begin a new people in Canaan, the land that would one day bear his grandson Jacob’s adopted name, Israel.\n\nGod had made a promise to Abraham that his family would become a great nation, but this promise came with a frightening vision of the troubles along the way:\n\nVoice of God: “Your descendants will dwell for a time in a land that is not their own, and they will be enslaved and afflicted for four hundred years; however, I will punish the nation that enslaved them, and afterwards they shall leave with great wealth.\"\n\nOnce upon a time, during a famine our ancestor Jacob and his family fled to Egypt where food was plentiful. His son Joseph had risen to high position in Pharaoh’s court, and our people were well-respected and well-regarded, secure in the power structure of the time.\n\nGenerations passed and our people remained in Egypt. In time, a new Pharaoh ascended to the throne. He found our difference threatening, and ordered our people enslaved. In fear of rebellion, Pharaoh decreed that all Hebrew baby boys be killed.\n\nPharaoh: There are too many Jews! Kill all the first born boys!\n\nTwo midwives named Shifrah and Puah defied his orders. Through their courage, a boy survived; midrash tells us he was radiant with light. Fearing for his safety, his family placed him in a basket and he floated down the Nile. He was found, and adopted, by Pharaoh’s daughter, who named him Moses because she drew him forth from the water. Thanks to Moses' sister Miriam, Pharaoh's daughter hired their mother, Yocheved, as his wet-nurse. Thus he survived to adulthood, and was raised as Prince of Egypt.\n\n Basket-puppet flowing down the river \n\nPharaoh's Daughter: Oh look! A little baby jew! I know a nice jewish woman who just so happens to have some milk to spare.\n\nAlthough a child of privilege, as he grew he became aware of the slaves who worked in the brickyards of his father. When he saw an overseer mistreat a slave, Moses struck the overseer and killed him. Fearing retribution, he set out across the Sinai alone. God spoke to him from a burning bush, which though it flamed was not consumed. The Voice called him to lead the Hebrew people to freedom. Moses argued with God, pleading inadequacy, but God disagreed. Sometimes our responsibilities choose us.\n\n Light Burning bush on fire \n\nBurning bush: Moses! You must go to Egypt and free your people from the fists of slavery \nMoses: Why me? Why would they listen to me? \nBurning bush: Just say god sent you. \nMoses: I should have thought of that. Okay! God!\n\nMoses returned to Egypt and went to Pharaoh to argue the injustice of slavery. He gave Pharaoh a mandate which resounds through history: Let my people go.\n\nPharaoh refused, and Moses warned him that Mighty God would strike the Egyptian people. These threats were not idle; ten terrible plagues were unleashed upon the Egyptians. Only when his nation lay in ruins did Pharaoh agree to our liberation.\n\nMoses: Let my people go! \nPharaoh: No! They're my slaves!\n\n Throw frogs at stage \n\nMoses: Let my people go! \nPharaoh: No!\n\n Throw cotton balls at stage \n\nMoses: Let them go! \nPharaoh: No!\n\n Turn off lights \n\nMoses: Let them go! \nPharaoh: Ah! Okay!\n\nFearful that Pharaoh would change his mind, our people fled, not waiting for their bread dough to rise. Our people did not leave Egypt alone; a “mixed multitude” went with them. From this we learn that liberation is not for us alone, but for all the nations of the earth. Even Pharaoh’s daughter came with us.\n\nPharaoh’s army followed us to the Sea of Reeds. One way to look at the text is very literally; in our life, there are people that we know who embody each of these four attributes or display them with some regularity.\n\nAnother explanation of the text is that the Four Children could be perceived as four personalities within one person. One could be “wicked” at a time when he or she gossips, one could be “simple” in the presence of someone more accomplished, and one could find it difficult to know where to begin when the topic he or she is listening to is foreign to him or her. Finally, one could be “wise” when he or she listens, is thoughtful in discussions and questions and studies the depth of an issue. \n\nThis Passover, we’ve decided to explore four ways we’ve seen people react to the current coronavirus health crisis, or plague (for those looking at the parallels between now and ancient times)- the delusional, hoarder, citizen and helper personalities. Are there other types you can think of? Give it some thought as you read the following four types we’ve explored.\n\nWhat does the delusional say?\n\nThis virus is a disease of old people. Why should I change my life? Even if I get the virus, I won’t get sick. \n\nAnswer the delusional, 20% of COVID hospitalization cases are people between the ages of 20 and 40, including a significant number of deaths. “Is this really a problem you need”?\n\n\n\nWhat does the hoarder say?\n\nI’m going to buy everything I can to stockpile in my house during this crisis. Why should I care if anyone else is able to obtain toilet paper? It’s their problem if they didn’t think of buying these items earlier.\n\nAnswer the Hoarder with a smile, we are all in this together and have to be respectful of the needs of others during these extraordinary times. “Buy only what you need” so that others may do the same.\n\n\n\nWhat does the citizen say?\n\nI’m going to do what the government asks of me. We might have waited too long to react, but now the only way we can protect ourselves and neighbors is to shelter in place. And there’s a bright side to our situation – I get to spend more time with my family, connect with old friends, learn an instrument, breathe cleaner air and maybe even clean out the garage.\n\nTell the citizen you are pleased they have all they need.\n\n\n\nWhat does the helper say?\n\nThese times are creating pain for a lot of people – dislocation, loneliness, lack of access to food and necessities, unemployment. I’m going to do everything I can to make life a little easier for the less fortunate during this uncertain period?\n\nTo the helper, simply ask, “what do you need”?\n\n\n\nHow have you reacted to the demands of the current health crisis in the world? If only…\n\nThe first part of this journey is taking a step back. Before one can see the way forward, one must take a pause to see where they currently are. \n\nResting is not doing nothing. If it was, there would be no reason to feel rejuvenated after a rest. Not-doing may not drain us, but why should it replenish us? While the fallow field seems like wasted space at the surface, the soil is regenerating and restoring its fertility so that by next season it will be ready to grow. The removal of rote submission awakes the natural state of the land.\n\nWhen we break our routines, the same process unlocks the mental shackles holding us at bay. Until the abused spouse has the perspective to name their home Egypt, and until an abused employee can see their workplace Egypt, they will not leave. \n\nAt first it may seem like admitting defeat to say that we are still enslaved. But it is exactly the opposite. When we see our agency and that our lives are connected to the lives of others, we can break through the isolation and see our plight as part of a larger struggle. Many people don’t take the necessary moments to acknowledge that oppression still influences their lives, rather chosing to see their problems as personal weaknesses and defects. The Exodus could only have been a communal process. As the earth shakes off the constrictions of winter, her frozen places thawing, so we remember our shaking-off the yoke of slavery to Pharaoh. As plant life and trees are “reborn” into the warming air, we tell the story of our renewal and rebirth out of the constriction of slavery and into freedom. We retell this story in embroidered detail at our seder tables. The ritual moments, symbols, and sounds of the seder are reminders of who we are and what we believe in. \n\n\n\nOn an more general level, the cyclical nature of Jewish traditions give us the opportunity to take note of significant transitions in our lives. We see this especially in the weekly Shabbat ritual; being able to refrain and release from our daily toil to see the world anew. The Sabbath’s message promotes the radical notion that ceasing our actions with meaningful ritual is not an admission of boredom or aimlessness, but of rest and renewal. This is the opposite of the slavery our mythic ancestors experienced then, and the opposite of the internal constriction we may experience now. \n\n\n\nOn the Jewish calendar this upcoming year is a shmita year, a year of Shabbat for the earth. Just as we were freed from slavery and can now embrace rest every seventh day, so we are called to free the earth from her labors every seventh year. Permitting the ground to rest gives the land a chance to reset itself. The great commentator and philosopher Maimonides wrote that the laws of the Sabbatical Year “are meant to make the earth more fertile and stronger through letting it lie fallow.” The message: resiliency and abundance sometimes requires us to let go. \n\n\n\nBut most of us don’t farm. How might we reinterpret this call? Consider the areas of your life where you could use some rest. Taking time to look inward can be hard - it requires the humilty to acknowledge that the world will go on without you. Before Passover we clean our houses of leavened bread (chameitz) and any products made of wheat, spelt, barley, oats, and rye, which rise when exposed to water. The deep cleaning of our homes points us Inward toward a deep cleaning of our selves. We seek to rid ourselves of anything that puffs us up and leads us to believe we are more important than we are.\n\n\n\nTonight, let us let go of the busy-ness of the world and enter a space of humility and reflection. Let us emerge refreshed and rededicated to rooting out slavery wherever it exists. It is parched, dry, and unassuming like the desert. When we consider matzah relative to bread, one of its meanings becomes clear. Bread is the puffed-up version of wheat, far removed from the flour and the earth from which it comes. In the context of Passover, bread symbolizes the additives and excesses that weigh us down and enslave us. Matzah reminds us of what bread would like us to forget\n\nPassover is the path back to basics - the earth, the wheat, and water - and our essential selves. Passover teaches that freedom comes when we rid ourselves of the burden of too much.\n\nThe broken matzah is symbol of our own brokenness and the brokenness of the world. Some of us have broken with the past — we may have lost a sense of history and a connection to our ancestors.
