Literally meaning \"Dividing,\" Yachatz presents multiple layers of meaning to contemplate on this evening of discovery. Here are a few ideas:</p>\n\n<p>1 - Simply the splitting of the sea through which the Israelites passed from slavery to freedom.</p>\n\n<p>2 - The duality of what is plainly observable and the hidden meaning behind everything, as part of the matzah is left in plain site sight and the other part is hidden and it and its meaning are literaly sought later in the evening.</p>\n\n<p>3 - As with all Jewish celebrations (this time being Liberation), our joy is always tempered by breacking something to recall less happy times, such as breacking a glass to conclude a wedding recalls the destruction of the ancient temple.</p>\n\n<p>4 - Similar to the previous idea, breaking an object is conclusive; it can't be undone. Thus, it emphasizes the finality of a wedding or any contract, and the enforcement of its terms. At the end of his life, rather than dying, he was whisked away to heaven.
