It is why, even at the most joyous of times like a wedding, we break a glass, and why, at our seder, we place an Elijah's cup on our table, as a way of believing that the Messiah is on their way. Certainly the conclusion of our seder, asking for \"Next Year in Jerusalem\" is the most clear symbol of hope, knowing that these words have been recited for centuries, not just since the establishment of the State of Israel. Jews have understood, and have held out hope, that better days were ahead. </span></span></p>\n\n\n\n<p><span><span>The Israeli National Anthem is called HaTikvah, the Hope, was written in 1886, 11 years before the first World Zionist Conferences and over 60 years before Israel was going to become a state. These words have carried the Jewish people and I believe can be an inspiration for all of us that better days will be ahead. </span></span></p>\n\n\n\n<p><span><span>We are in difficult times right now. We have not had \"in this generation\" a crisis such as this, where all of us had to come together, across time and space, to respond to a pandemic that doesn't discriminate. And yet, in so doing, we have seen the power of our community. From the voices in this haggadah to the messages that we are seeing from so many in the Jewish world, I believe that the strength of Judaism and Jewish community has not been diminished by our physical distancing but strengthened by our spiritual connection. </span></span></p>\n\n\n\n<p><span><span>Thank you to all of you, to our members,  to our families of members, to our friends, to our entire staff, to our lay leadership, thank you for all you have done to keep us connected during these days. It is hard to believe that we have been enduring the plague of this global pandemic for 13 months. Over the past year we have seen an invisible virus reach our shores, torment our community, and force many of us into isolation. As the year wore on, the plagues of racial injustice we made more visible, and the fissures within our country grew even deeper. I raise this not to make us feel sad but to remind us, that in every generation there are moments where we feel enslaved, when we feel the tears welling up in our eyes, and the darkness feels closer than ever. And yet, we can turn to the Haggadah, the quintessential story, and remind ourselves that as deep as we might be in despair, hope and redemption can be on the horizon. </p>\n\n<p>The story of Passover is the story of going from degredation to praise, idol worship to a sense of the divine, and slavery to freedom. </p>\n\n<p>But as you move through this haggadah, thoughtfully put together by SPS Rabbinic Intern David Chapman, and with additions by many SPS members and Cantor Keren and Cantor Kanfer, know that all of us are moving from slavery to freedom, from feeling lost to feeling found, from being in dire straights to seeing redemption. These are trying times, but as a community we have been through tough times before. At Kadesh, we open the Seder with blessings over both the first cup of wine and the holiday of Passover. This is such a powerful act! We say the words that elevate the Seder from just another night to erev Pesach. Our blessing the day sanctifies it; that is our power, that is our freedom. The planning and execution that goes into the ritual meal; shopping lists to prepare, name cards to make, the order in which the charoset is served, etc. My parents meticulously plan and discuss for weeks; who should read which passage? does it make sense to serve individual seder plates? The annual production of it all is something that makes me feel both excited and calm. As though we are actors in a play. </span></span></span></span></p>\n\n\n\n<p><span><span><span><span>Guests arrive, family dynamics step up to the plate and the production begins. The time that I spend in the kitchen with my mother, preparing the ritual foods to go out is my favorite part. I am the daughter of a strong, Jewish woman; a Wonder Woman of sorts. She thrives in chaos and having 30 people over for Pesach definitely qualifies as chaos. From my mother I have learned that order can be beautiful and that carrying out the same ritual tasks year after year can make you feel like a part of something bigger. How does what could be the dramatic, enthralling retelling of our greatest collective story shift to be so complicated?</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>My answer to this question is that when we tell our own stories, we rarely tell them clearly, chronologically, or without distractions. While the Haggadah has been assembled and edited over the centuries, we have kept the core <i>ta’am</i>, flavor, of that original storytelling style. Now, as we all learn how to live in this new world defined by social distancing, we need to continue telling our stories. They may not be neat, or clean, or linear; they might be full of questions, interruptions and side comments. They are still ours, and they are still worth sharing. Our lives are on hold and many people feel isolated.<br />\n<strong>PESACH STILL HAPPENS AS SCHEDULED.</strong><br />\nIt still presumes order and togetherness.<br />\nRegardless of our diversity, our Jewish tradition tells us whom to invite to our home for the Seder. We surround ourselves with our family, our friends and the stranger. \"Let all who are hungry, come and eat.\"</span></span></p>\n\n<p><br />\n<span><span>In 2020 the Seder is different from all other Seders in our lifetime.<br />\nThe Pesach celebration is enhanced by bringing together multiple generations. Today, however, we are unable to reach out to fulfill this obligation without endangering lives.<br />\nThe song FROM A DISTANCE takes on a new meaning.<br />\nWith modern technology we are able to share our story by having a virtual Seder through social media. The guests, who would be invited, join us and no one is at a solo Seder.<br />\nWe set a place for those not present, a glass of wine and a plate (with their photo), so they are with us.<br />\nWe recall for them and for our children, past Seders - the joy, the laughter, the stories that we shared.<br />\nAs we read the Haggadah out loud, we dedicate portions to them. Everyone says the 4 questions, everyone is one of the 4 Sons or 4 Daughters. People of all levels of knowledge and experience are with us.<br />\nThis year we invite, not to our table but to our hearts and memory, those incredible health care professionals, who on a daily basis through their love and devotion, risk their lives to save others.<br />\nAnd then we invite Elijah, the Prophet, for whom we open the door and recite verses from the Psalms. I love the intentionality that goes into choosing a Haggadah. As a convert, my first introduction to Passover was when a friend of my boyfriend (now husband) was hosting a seder in college. We used a version of the Freedom Seder, which was so amazingly reflective of this person. I was immediately drawn to how a Seder contains a common “order” observed by all Jews, but also allows for so much discussion, consideration, and commentary particular to the people seated around your table that year. </span></span></span></span></p>\n\n\n\n<p><span><span><span><span>Every year since, we have hosted a seder, and every year we take the time to consider the words we are including. For our upcoming virtual seder, we have been updating our Haggadah to make sure our language appropriately reflects our changed circumstances. But despite being quarantined, our Haggadah helps us remember that while once we were slaves in Egypt, now we are free. You might remember an answer from past Passover seders: when the Israelites left Egypt, we were in too much of a hurry to let the dough rise, so we baked our dough into matzot as we fled.</span></span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span><span>But it turns out the story of matzot is more complicated. The commandment to eat matzah comes <i>before</i> the final plague and the exodus.  In Exodus 10, God tells Israel that we shall eat matzah as part of a remembrance of God’s actions on our behalf. But it says nothing at that point about leaving in haste.  This is about four days before the actual departure – plenty of time to bake bread.  </span></span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span><span>It is not until later (Ex. 12) that we see the scene referenced in our Haggadot about baking dough into matzot because of our haste. This inconsistency has troubled commentators for centuries. Is eating matzah simply a re-enactment of our hurry, or a commandment in its own right?  </span></span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span><span>My friend, Rabbi Ayalon Eliach, explains that we must look towards a deeper, symbolic difference between matzah and bread for an answer. Bread and matzah are made of the same basic ingredients – flour and water.  But bread also requires yeast, heat, and time. This catalyzes a transformation in the very character of what we are eating.  For most of us, bread – the raw ingredients plus transformation – is the preferable way to consume grain. <span><span>Leaven therefore symbolizes the kind of acceptance conditioned on transformation; whereas matzah represents the acceptance of things in their current state.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span><span>In this metaphor, we are the matzah!  We are the raw ingredients, a little rougher, a little harder to digest, sometimes frankly a little inedible.
