Break it into two pieces. Wrap the larger piece, the Afikoman, in a napkin to be hidden later. As you hold up the remaining smaller piece, read these words together: \n\nWe now hold up this broken matzah, which so clearly can never be repaired. We eat the smaller part while the larger half remains out of sight and out of reach for now. We begin by eating this bread of affliction and, then, only after we have relived the journey through slavery and the exodus from Egypt, do we eat the Afikoman, the bread of our liberation. We see that liberation can come from imperfection and fragmentation. Terrible. Our gardens and crops are dying. There is no rain this year. That is why we had to come down to Egypt!\n\nJOSEPH: Scott \n\nWell, don’t worry..life in Egypt is fantastic. Ipads in every house, High Definition Television, Teslas in the driveway, This is the most powerful nation on the planet!\n\nBENJAMIN: Brad \n\nDid you have rain this year? Are the gardens and crops doing well?\n\nJOSEPH: Scott \n\nWe don’t have to worry about that. I’ve stored away tons of food in giant warehouses. The Pharaoh will be able to feed the people for three years at least, even if we get no rain.\n\nBENJAMIN: Brad \n\nWhat does the Pharaoh think of us Hebrews?\n\nJOSEPH: Scott\n\n He loves me. He welcomes the Hebrews into his land. Bring the entire family, we’ll make a great life here.\n\nNarrator: Pauline\n\nThe Hebrews all moved to Egypt and had many children and lived a successful life. But after many years, after Joseph and his brothers had died, a new Pharaoh rose to power.\n\nPHAROAH: Mark\n\nAdvisor, bring me the latest census report. I want to know all the people who I rule over!\n\nADVISOR: Melissa\n\nYes, you’re Royal Highness. I have the numbers here.\n\nPHAROAH: Mark\n\n Let’s see..Nubians, Midians, yes, very good. Are there really that many Hebrews?\n\nADVISOR: Jenna\n\nOh yes, your highness. They are growing in number. They are very strong workers.\n\nPHAROAH: Mark\n\nDo you think that might be a danger? Perhaps they will challenge my rule – make demands. You know how these workers are always complaining about the size of the rocks for the new Pyramids. I am worried that they will use their strength in numbers to rise up against me!\n\nADVISOR: Jared\n\nYes, you are right, we must do something to break their spirits.\n\nPHAROAH: Mark\n\nFirst, let us begin with something small. We’ll get them to make more bricks each day. If that doesn’t work, we’ll eliminate the fifteen-minute breaks. If that doesn’t break them, then maybe we’ll turn to harsher measures.\n\nNarrator: Pauline\n\nThe Hebrew workers struggled to keep up with Pharaoh’s demands.\n\nHEBREW 1: Jenna\n\nMy hands are killing me. And my back, oy! I can’t take this pace.\n\nHEBREW 2: Melissa\n\nWe can make a thousand bricks a day—but two thousand? No team can work that hard! We’ll fall over!\n\nHEBREW 3:Niki\n\nGet back to work, the boss is coming!\n\nBOSS: Vin\n\nEfficiency, people! We have got to make 900 more bricks by sundown! Come on, let’s work faster!\n\nHEBREW 1: Dani\n\nWe are working as fast as we can, boss.\n\nBOSS: Vin\n\nListen, smart aleck, I’ve got a lot of pressure on my shoulders. If Pharaoh doesn’t get his bricks, I’m out of a job. I got a family to feed, too, you know. So get back down in the pit and start working!\n\nHEBREW 2: Melissa\n\nWe haven’t had a break all day!\n\nBOSS: Vin\n\nAnd you are not going to get one! Work!\n\nHEBREW 4:Danielle\n\nYou know what, boss; you have become a real pain in the backside!\n\nBOSS: Vin\n\nWhat’d you say?\n\nHEBREW 1: Jenna\n\nYou heard me.\n\n[The BOSS walks over and pushes Hebrew 3 to the ground]\n\nBOSS: Vin\n\nNow get back to work before I get really angry!\n\nNarrator: Pauline\n\nMeanwhile, Pharaoh’s daughter adopted a young Hebrew child. The child, Moses, was raised with the finest Egypt had to offer.\n\nBAT PHAROAH: Rafi\n\nHere, sweetheart, eat your honey cakes before your flute lesson.\n\nMOSES: Billy \n\nI’m so excited about the party this evening.\n\nBAT PHAROAH: Rafi\n\nYour new robe looks lovely, dear. I just hope that the Pyramid is finished. Your grandfather has the workers working double time just to get the place finished before the great assembly.\n\nMOSES: Billy \n\n I heard that the Hebrews were complaining.\n\nBAT PHAROAH: Niki\n\nComplaining? Don’t worry about that. We take care of the needs of all our workers, dear. They are fed, given homes, and we give them a new pair of shoes each year. We are very generous. The only problem is that there are simply too many Hebrews. For that reason, we are cutting down their number. I know that it is sad that we have to kill off their baby boys, but we are really doing it for their own good.\n\nMOSES: Billy \n\nI know so little about the world. Someday I’d like to go out of the palace and see how they live.\n\nBAT PHAROAH:Melissa\n\nThey are not clean like us, dear. Especially the Hebrews. They throw garbage on the streets, and the smells are truly horrible.\n\nNarrator: Pauline\n\nOne day Moses decides to sneak out of the palace, and see for himself the plight of the Hebrews.\n\nHEBREW 1: Danielle\n\nI can’t work, today, I’m sick! And I hurt my arm yesterday lifting stones!\n\nBOSS: Vin\n\nI don’t want to hear excuses. This pyramid has got to be finished by Thursday! Today is Wednesday! So get moving!\n\nHEBREW 1: Jenna\n\nI can’t work. Please, listen to me, have some compassion!\n\nHEBREW 2: Melissa\n\nGive him a break, boss!\n\nBOSS: Vin\n\nShut up!\n\nHEBREW 3: Niki\n\nDon’t get involved!\n\nHEBREW 2: Melissa\n\nI’m tired of this, boss! My cousin there is hurt. He can’t work today. And he’s not working. So go tell Pharaoh that he’ll have to hire some more workers or this isn’t getting done!\n\nBOSS: Vin\n\nShut up!\n\n[Boss pushes Hebrew 2 to the ground.]\n\nHEBREW 1: Danielle\n\nStop it!\n\nBOSS: Vin\n\nI’m going to hurt you bad, you whiny Hebrew!\n\nHEBREW 3: Niki\n\nStop! One of Pharaoh’s princes is coming!\n\nMOSES: Billy\n\nWhat is happening?\n\nBOSS: Vin\n\nI am going to give this man the beating he deserves, your honor! Watch this!\n\nMOSES: Billy\n\nNo!\n\n[Moses hits the Boss, who falls to the ground]\n\nHEBREW 3: Niki\n\nOh no! What did you do to the boss? We’ll be blamed for this! We’ll be punished!\n\nMOSES: Billy\n\nWhat have I done? What have I done?\n\nNarrator: Pauline\n\nMoses ran away, far off into the wilderness. Where he is taken in by Yitro, and marries one of Yitro’s daughter’s Zipporah. One day, as Moses is taking care of yitro’s sheep, he stumbles across a burning bush.\n\nGOD: Jenna\n\nMoses, Moses!\n\nMOSES: Billy\n\nWho is that? What is going on? What is happening?\n\nGOD: Jenna\n\nIt is me, the God of your ancestors, Abraham, Issac, and Jacob.\n\nMOSES: Billy\n\nYou must have the wrong number.\n\nGOD: Jenna\n\nThis is no time for jokes. You must go back to Egypt and stand up to Pharaoh! Then you will lead the people back to their homeland!\n\nMOSES: Billy\n\nHow will I do that? The people do not know me! I have no power now that I have run away!\n\nGOD: Jenna\n\nI will be with you. Go to your sister, Miriam, and brother, Aaron, and stand up to Pharaoh!\n\nNarrator: Pauline\n\nMoses returns to Egypt, with his wife and son, Gershom. Aaron and Moses approach Pharaoh.\n\nPHAROAH: Mark\n\nWhat do you want?\n\nAARON: Brad\n\nOur people need a three-day vacation. We need to go outside of the city so that we can pray to God in our own way.\n\nPHAROAH: Mark\n\nWhy can’t you wait for the festival of the pyramids? Then your people will have a chance to celebrate with everyone.\n\nMOSES: Billy\n\nWe do not wish to pray to your gods. We have one God, who is mightier than all of your gods.\n\nPHAROAH: Mark\n\nYou must be joking. The gods have made Egypt a great nation. What has your God done for you?\n\nMOSES: Billy\n\nYou’ll see what our God can do! And then you’ll give in to our demands!\n\nPHAROAH: Mark\n\nDon’t count on it, Hebrew!\n\nNarrator: Pauline\n\nPharaoh was a stubborn man. Even after plagues of blood, frogs, lice, disease, hail, and darkness, he would not let the Hebrews take a day off. It wasn’t until a disease struck and killed the first born of every Egyptian, that the Pharaoh changed his mind.\n\nPHAROAH: Mark\n\nDon’t you understand what is happening?\n\nADVISOR: Jared \n\nNo, your highness, I don’t know why our gods are not protecting us.\n\nPHAROAH: Mark\n\nEverything we did to the Hebrews is now happening to us!!!\n\nADVISOR: Melissa\n\nMaybe their God is powerful!\n\nPHAROAH: Mark\n\nTell the police that are surrounding their neighborhood to let them go.\n\nNarrator: Pauline\n\nThat night, Moses, spoke to the people.\n\nMOSES: Billy\n\nPut on your sandals, we will not have time to bake the bread for tomorrow! Tonight we will leave Egypt, and set out for a new land! Our children, and our children’s children will remember this night! Facing this mirror of history, how do we answer their challenge now?\n\nAs reflect on the Jews’ fight for justice from the Egyptians, it is impossible not to think of our world today. Entering the year 2020, we have been witness to an unprecedented pandemic. This is a time that requires us – all of us – to join hands for the greater good. As we confront this time of crisis, we have seen the power of action and the destruction of evil, the influence of goodness and the cost of apathy. The values of the Four Children – wicked, wise, simple, indifferent— have come alive. We can see just how the decisions these four characters make and the questions they ask can have lasting consequences.\n\nDuring this time of trial and uncertainty, as we are asked to limit our social time together in order to secure the safety of humankind, how does each child respond?\n\nThe wise child is engaged, asking how they can best serve and fight for their community.\n\nThe wicked child rejects the notion of acting on the behalf of others, too concerned with their own happiness to worry about the world around them.\n\nThe simple child shrugs and follows the crowd into isolation. This child is not curious as to what they can do to help, but is willing to abide by the new social norms for as long as its convenient to them.\n\nFinally, the indifferent child, the one who doesn’t know how or what to ask, does not understand just how important their role is in ensuring the safety of their peers. It is the job of the wise child, and others who have chosen to take action, to remind the indifferent child just how impactful their engagement can be.\n\nWhere do you see the Four Children reflected in yourself? The idea of one God, invisible and all-powerful, inspired him to leave his family and begin a new people in Canaan, the land that would one day bear his grandson Jacob’s adopted name, Israel.\n\nGod had made a promise to Abraham that his family would become a great nation, but this promise came with a frightening vision of the troubles along the way: “Your descendants will dwell for a time in a land that is not their own, and they will be enslaved and afflicted for four hundred years; however, I will punish the nation that enslaved them, and afterwards they shall leave with great wealth.\"\n\n Raise the glass of wine and say: \n\nוְהִיא שֶׁעָמְדָה לַאֲבוֹתֵֽינוּ וְלָֽנוּ\n\nV’hi she-amda l’avoteinu v’lanu.\n\nThis promise has sustained our ancestors and us.\n\nFor not only one enemy has risen against us to annihilate us, but in every generation there are those who rise against us. But God saves us from those who seek to harm us.\n\n The glass of wine is put down. \n\nIn the years our ancestors lived in Egypt, our numbers grew, and soon the family of Jacob became the People of Israel. We’re not quite done. There are still some symbols on our seder plate we haven’t talked about yet. Rabban Gamliel would say that whoever didn’t explain the shank bone, matzah, and marror (or bitter herbs) hasn’t done Passover justice.\n\nThe shank bone represents the Pesach, the special lamb sacrifice made in the days of the Temple for the Passover holiday. It is called the pesach, from the Hebrew word meaning “to pass over,” because God passed over the houses of our ancestors in Egypt when visiting plagues upon our oppressors.\n\nThe matzah reminds us that when our ancestors were finally free to leave Egypt, there was no time to pack or prepare. Our ancestors grabbed whatever dough was made and set out on their journey, letting their dough bake into matzah as they fled.\n\nThe bitter herbs provide a visceral reminder of the bitterness of slavery, the life of hard labor our ancestors experienced in Egypt.\n\n Orange - The orange on the Seder plate has come to symbolize full inclusion in modern day Judaism for those who were traditionally not seen as full participants or leaders in Jewish life and traditions, especially women and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people. The common tale was that a man once said that women don’t belong leading aspects of worship in Judaism by saying “A woman on the bimah is like an orange on the Seder plate.” (The bimah is a podium where people stand to read from the “Torah”, as Jews call the Old Testament of the Bible.) - both things that don't belong. In this ritual the cup of wine we enjoy at this seder is diminished because, in our times as well, freedom, health and lives of others are curtailed. Each drop of wine we pour represents the hope and prayer that people will cast out the plagues that threaten everyone everywhere they are found...beginning in out own hearts. \n\nAs we rejoice at our deliverance from slavery, we acknowledge that our freedom was hard-earned. We regret that our freedom came at the cost of the Egyptians’ suffering, for we are all human beings made in the image of God. At the end of his life, rather than dying, he was whisked away to heaven. Marcy & Pauline

As we light these candles, we pray for all those suffering

in the world find light amid the darkness.

We pray that our experiences today

help us to ignite the spark of justice within each of us.

We pray for social justice,
for the alleviation of the crippling poverty
that condemns millions of people around the world
to lives of misery - hungry, sick, and utterly without hope.
We pray for the children who are starving,
who are condemned to homelessness, slave labor, and prostitution,
and especially for those forced to fight, to kill and torture
even members of their own family.
We pray for the victims of violence and war,
for those wounded in body and for those wounded in mind.
We pray for the multitudes of refugees, forced from their homes to alien places
through war or through the utter destruction of their environment.

We pray for an end to cruelty,
for an end to bullying, and torture in all its forms.
We pray that we may learn the peace that comes with forgiving
and the strength we gain in loving;
that we may learn to take nothing for granted in this life;
that we may learn to see and understand with our hearts;
that we may learn to rejoice in our being. We pray for these things with humility;
We pray because of the hope that is within us,
and because of a faith in the ultimate triumph of the human spirit; .
We pray, above all, for peace throughout the world.

We pray that we have the strength to carry forth this light into our homes,

Creating a beautiful and bold flame that inspires others to work for the freedom and security of the innocent people.
