This year, our remarkable circumstances make the physical gathering impossible but the significance even greater. The tradition endures and adapts as we do. This virtual seder and digital haggadah are evidence that with the right tools, we'll still figure out a way to justify eating matzoh balls and brisket on a Wednesday. Thanks to all the contributions that made this haggadah possible and to Mom/Gogo/Margot for inspiring the whole thing.
",

The story of the Jewish people is truly a triumph of life. Against the odds of history, the Jewish people have done more than survive - we have adapted creatively to each new time, each new place, from the birth of our people to the present day.
\n\n
READ: Even though death has pursued us relentlessly, time and time again, we have chosen to live. During the many centuries of the Jewish experience, memories of destruction are tempered by the knowledge that the world can also be good.
\n\n
READ: We have endured slavery and humiliation. We have also enjoyed freedom and power. Darkness has been balanced by light.
\n\n
READ: Our forebears traveled the Earth in search of the safety and liberty they knew must exist. We have learned to endure. We have learned to progress.
\n\n
READ: We are proud survivors. We celebrate our good fortune and seek the advancement of all.
\n\n
LEADER:
\n\n
One of the customs of the seder is the asking of questions - questions about what the ritual actions of the seder mean. The Passover tradition involves the youngest children asking - actually singing - about these matters in a song we call \"The Four Questions.\"
",

They didn't build the pyramids in Egypt but they did build stuff; either way it definitely wasn't fun.
\n\n
One mother hid her baby, Moses, in a basket in the river because she wanted him to be a sea captain and figured he should get an early start on floating. Pharoah's daughter found him and took him home to live in the palace. Moses grew up. He saw the slaves working so hard. He had a fight about it and ran away to be a shepherd which would have made his mother weep, \"oy gevalt, a shepard?? what a nudnik! I wanted for him to be sea captain or at least a lawyer, something respectable!!\"
\n\n
While he was looking after the sheep, he saw a bush on fire that did not burn up and heard God's voice telling him to go back to Egypt, to tell Pharoah to let the Jewish people go. So Moses went to Pharoah, he said \"Let my people go\". Pharaoh said \"No\". So Moses called in for backup and got 10 plagues to rock the Pharaoh's world. After the 10th one, Pharoah had bigger issues on his hands so he said, \"Go now, before I change my mind, you stinky shepard.\"
\n\n
The people got ready to leave very quickly, so quickly that they grabbed whatever they could including their bread which didn't have time to rise; it baked into matzah.
\n\n
They walked through the desert to the sea. Pharoah's soldiers chased after them. When they got to the sea, Moses held up his his staff and the sea divided. The Jewish people walked through the sea to freedom and a new future.
",

"body": "
Karpas (a green vegetable, most often parsley)
\n\n
Karpas represents the initial flourishing of the Israelites during the first years under Egyptian rule. In the course of the seder, we dip the karpas in salt water (Ashkenazi custom) or vinegar (Sephardi custom) in order to taste both the hope of new birth and the tears that the Israelite slaves shed over their condition. Karpas also symbolizes the new spring.
\n\n
Haroset (sweet fruit paste symbolizing mortar)
\n\n
This mix of fruits, wine or honey, and nuts symbolizes the mortar that the Israelite slaves used to construct buildings for Pharaoh.
\n\n
Maror (bitter herb, often horseradish)
\n\n
This bitter herb allows us to taste the bitterness of slavery. Today, most Jews use horseradish as maror. Originally, though, maror was probably a bitter lettuce, such as romaine, or a root, such as chicory. Like life in Egypt, these lettuces and roots taste sweet when one first bites into them, but then become bitter as one eats more. We dip maror into haroset in order to associate the bitterness of slavery with the work that caused so much of this bitterness.
\n\n
Zeroa (shank bone)
\n\n
A roasted lamb shank bone that symbolizes the lamb that Jews sacrificed as the special Passover offering when the Temple stood in Jerusalem. The zeroa does not play an active role in the seder, but serves as a visual reminder of the sacrifice that the Israelites offered immediately before leaving Egypt and that Jews continued to offer until the destruction of the Temple.
\n\n
Beitzah (egg)
\n\n
A roasted or hard-boiled egg that symbolizes the hagigah sacrifice, which would be offered on every holiday (including Passover) when the Temple stood. The roundness of the egg also represents the cycle of life — even in the most painful of times, there is always hope for a new beginning.
",

However, we remember that working against oppression in the world is our never-ending responsibility.
\n\n
We recommit ourselves to the vision of a world filled with peace and justice for all.
\n\n
We work for a world where \"nation shall not lift-up sword against nation nor study war anymore.\"
\n\n
We work for a world where people are not treated unfairly because of their race, their religion, their gender, their age, their marital status, their skin color, the people they love, their profession or their politics.
\n\n
We work for a world that affirms the inherent worth and dignity of every person on our planet and assures basic human rights for everyone, everywhere.
\n\n
We are not waiting for a miracle but rather proceeding with faith that we will find the strength and resolve to work together to heal the world.
\n\n
We close our Seder by saying, \"L'Shanah Haba'ah B'Yerushalyim\", which means \"Next Year in Jerusalem.\" For centuries, this declaration expressed the Jewish people's goal to return to our homeland. Even after the founding of the State of Israel in 1948, these words still resonate with us.
\n\n
We all have our own personal aspirations and dreams that we are striving for. As we conclude our Seder, may we have the strength and the will to continue working toward our personal Jerusalem and toward a world where all people will live in shalom -- peace, safety and freedom.
\n\n
LETS EAT!!!!!!!!
\n\n
\n
Haggadah Section: Conclusion
\n\n
Source: Bob Frankle (edited by Steve Gilison 4/2020)
",
