The Order of our Seder

Introduction

Kadesh: Beginning the seder, and the first cup of wine.

Urchatz: Ritual hand washing.

Blessing over the flowers*

Karpas: Greens dipped in salt water.

Yachatz: Break the middle matzah and hide the afikomen.

Maggid: Ask the four questions, answer them, tell the story, list the ten plagues, and have the second cup of wine.

Rachtzah: Handwashing with a blessing.

Motzi-matzah: Matzah is shared and eaten.

Maror: Horseradish is shared and eaten.

Korech: Charoset, bitter herbs, and matzah are eaten together.

Shulchan Orech: The festive meal!

Tzafun: Find the afikomen!

Barech hamazon: Grace after meals, and the third cup of wine.

Hallel: Sing songs of praise, fill Elijah's and Miriam's cups, open the door for Elijah, and drink the fourth cup of wine.

Nirtzah: Conclude the seder.

Now we will open the door to symbolically welcome “the stranger.” Here, at our seder, instead of pulling folks literally off the street, we choose to share our traditions with friends and family, those outside the faith, and those for whom this might be their first seder ever!
