There are four cups of wine during the Seder…
The Four Cups symbolize four distinct promises made by G-d in Exodus 6:6-7:
Cup of Sanctification: “I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians” (ESV).
Cup of Deliverance: “I will deliver you from slavery to them” (ESV).
Cup of Redemption: “I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great acts of judgment” (ESV).
Cup of Restoration: “I will take you to be my people, and I will be your G-d, and you shall know that I am the L-RD your G-d, who has brought you outfrom under the burdens of the Egyptians” (ESV).
The First Cup ~ The Cup of Sanctification: I will bring you out. The Israelites had been in bondage for hundreds of years. They were slaves to a cruel taskmaster. They could not free themselves; they needed a deliverer to rescue them from Egyptian slavery when the deliverer came they had to choose to leave their slavery. We also need a deliverer (Messiah Yeshua) to free us from bondage to sin.
All: Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu melech ha-olam, borei peri hagafen.
ברוך אתה ה' אלוהינו מלך העולם, בורא פרי הגפן.
Blessed are you, Adonai, our G-d, sovereign of the universe, who has created the
fruit of the vine.
